    摘要: There is described an authentication system in which during an enrolment process a distinctive characteristic of a subject being enrolled is measured to generate a reference number representative of the subject. Authentication data is then generated using the reference number, and the authentication data is stored for use in a subsequent verification process. During verification, the representative characteristic of the subject being verified is re-measured to generate a test number representative of the subject being verified and the authentication data during enrolment is retrieved. The authentication system then checks for equality between the test number and the reference number using the retrieved authentication data. If the test number and the reference number are equal, then the authenticity of the subject is verified, otherwise the authenticity is denied.

    摘要: A captioning system is provided for providing captions for audio and/or video presentations. The captioning system can be used to provide text captions or audio descriptions of a video presentation. A user device is provided for the captioning system having a receiver operable to receive the captions together with synchronisation information and a caption output circuit which is operable to output the captions at the appropriate timings defined by the synchronisation information. The user device is preferably a portable hand-held device such as a mobile telephone, PDA or the like.

    摘要: There is described a process for generating a number representative of an analogue data source in which during enrolment a distinctive characteristic of the analogue data source is measured to obtain physical data. Part of the physical data is used to generate a physical value which is representative of the analogue source. An error correction algorithm is applied to the physical value to generate error correction data, which is then transformed, using another part of the physical data, to generate transform data. During subsequent regeneration of the physical value, the distinctive characteristic is re-measured to generate a new set of physical data, and a physical value is generated using the same part of the physical data as was used during enrolment. Error correction data is then generated by transforming the transform data, using an inverse transform to that used during enrolment, using the same part of the physical data as was used to transform the error correction data during enrolment. The regenerated error correction data is then used by the error correction algorithm to correct errors in the physical value representative of the analogue source. By using part of the physical data set to transform the error correction data and then storing the resulting transform data, the security of the original physical data is improved.

    摘要: A tracking system is described in which a mobile tag having an unknown position is tracked in space over time. The mobile tag transmits a signal comprising a sequence of frequency components at different frequencies. The transmitted signal is received at each of a plurality of receivers, each having a known location. Each of the receivers measures the phase of each of the tones and the phase measures are passed to a central processing unit. The central processing unit then uses the determined phase measures to determine the position of the tag at the time of the transmission. Various novel tag arrangements are described which generate new transmission signals which improve accuracy and reliability of the position measurements obtained.
