The optimization process can also take into account predicted energy generation amounts by the renewable energy sources. The DC/DC converter is preferably controlled to maintain a voltage of the ultra-capacitor at a higher value than the voltage of the power source.

This invention relates a control strategy for a hybrid electric vehicle having an electric motor, a battery and an internal combustion engine. The control strategy improves fuel economy and reduces emissions while providing sufficient acceleration over a varying set of driving conditions through an adaptive control unit with an artificial neural network. The artificial neural network is trained on a pre-processed training set based on the highest fuel economies of multiple control strategies and multiple driving profiles. Training the artificial neural network includes a training algorithm and a learning algorithm. The invention also includes a method of operating a hybrid electric vehicle with an adaptive control strategy using an artificial neural network.

The techniques obtain nominal parameters for a battery model of the battery system based on a measured temperature and an estimated open circuit voltage (OCV). The techniques use these nominal parameters and the corrected measured current to estimate the OCV, a capacity, and an impedance of the battery system. The techniques utilize the OCV to estimate a state of charge (SOC) of the battery system. The techniques also estimate a state of health (SOH) of the battery system based on its estimated capacity and impedance. The techniques then control the electrified vehicle based on the SOC and/or the SOH.
