摘要: A mobile communications system includes base stations and mobile units. A power control scheme is provided in which a mobile unit can enter into a discontinuous transmission (DTX) mode. During DTX mode, the mobile unit is not transmitting traffic channels that can be monitored to determine frame errors so that the target ratio of energy per bit to noise spectral density (target Eb/No) can be adjusted. Instead, the base station monitors bit errors of bits in a pilot channel communicated by the mobile unit during DTX mode. Using this technique, the target Eb/No can be adjusted even when the mobile unit is not transmitting traffic channels, so that outer-loop power control can be performed. A number of mechanisms can also be used to detect when a mobile unit has entered DTX mode.

摘要: A method and apparatus for controlling forward gain transmission values of a base station transceiver system includes adjusting forward gain values according to mobile station power control commands as well as to forward gain values commanded by a base station controller. The forward gain values commanded by a base station controller are used as an input to determining what the forward gain value should be and are not implemented exactly as commanded. Thus, a base station transceiver system formed according to the present invention examines the power control commands received by a mobile station relative to a power gain command received by the base station controller. For example, if the power gain command received from the base station controller is responsive to a forward gain value that was transmitted in the past, when a plurality of power control commands were received in the interim, the plurality of power control commands are accounted for as well as the forward gain value commanded by the base station controller when determining the actual forward gain value for the next transmission. Additionally, subsequent power gain commands are also compared to prior power gain commands wherein subsequent adjustments are only made based on the differences between them.

摘要: A mobile station transmits sub-packets at a specified transmission rate or an autonomous transmission rate based on a PERSISTENCE bit. The mobile station increments, decrements, or does not change the transmission rate when the PERSISTENCE bit is a second logic state and a rate control bit (RCB) value is a first, a second, or a third value. Another embodiment of the present invention includes an ALL_ACID_IND bit that instructs the mobile station to adjust the specified transmission rate for either a single H-ARQ channel or for all H-ARQ channels. In an alternate embodiment, the mobile station uses the RCB in conjunction with a NAK to adjust a transmission-to-pilot ratio. After the NAK, the mobile station monitors the RCB value to increase the transmission rate, decrease the transmission rate, or not to change the transmission rate of subsequent sub-packets of the same data packet.

摘要: A base station controller includes circuitry for determining whether a transmitter is transmitting in a DTX mode or operation for a supplemental channel in a CDMA network. The invention includes the steps of determining frame quality metrics for data received on a fundamental and a supplemental channel. If the frame quality metric is good, meaning that the number of errors is below a defined threshold, on the supplemental channel, then the mobile station is not, by definition, within a DTX mode of operation. However, if each of the base stations that are on the active list of base stations for the mobile station report that the mobile station frame quality metric is not below or within a specified threshold, then the base station performs a calculation to determine whether the mobile station is in a DTX mode of operation or is transmitting a null set. Specifically, the base station calculates a signal to noise ratio for the pilot channel as well as for the supplemental channel and compares or determines a ratio of these two calculations. If the ratio is within or below a specified threshold, then an erasure has occurred. If not, then the mobile station did transmit in a DTX mode of operation.

摘要: A method and apparatus for providing wireless data packet call regulation and call access for wireless Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communications in a wireless network. A first and second time stamp is generated upon the reception and successful transmission of a data packet. A packet delay is determined based upon the first and second time stamps. At least one average delay metric is used to determine whether to provide new call access based on the at least one average delay metric. Another aspect of the present invention is to block a class of users based, in part, on the average sector delay for each user subscriber class. If the average sector delay is greater than that allowed for a class of users, users of that class are denied access. A delay quality of service (QoS) block metric is used to determine if an individual user should be force dropped.

摘要: A method for optimizing power management in the transmittal of a variable rate data transfer between two wireless stations, such as a Base Station Transceiver and a Mobile Station. This is achieved by determining the initial power and the initial signal-to-noise values based on the reliability of the transmission, the desired data transfer rate, the power required to transmit a fixed rate message, and the frame error rates. By the use of this invention, the capacity of a desired system and/or quality of a service provided by a desired system may be enhanced.

摘要: The method and apparatus of the present invention includes reducing the power level by a delta value in excess of the reduction in the bit error rate and its proportionate power reduction rate in response to a data rate change. If the bit rate is reduced to eighth, then the power transmission level can be reduced to a value of 1/(8+Δ) relative to FULL power. As an additional aspect of the present invention, the base station controller also generates a selectable frame error rate calculates the corresponding signal to noise ratios that will provide the commanded frame error rate. The FER may be selected according to data type or source or according to power transmission level and for data rate.

摘要: A wireless communication system facilitates wireless communication with a mobile unit operating within a respective service area. The wireless communication system includes a mobile switching center and a plurality of base stations with each base stations coupled to the mobile switching center and providing wireless coverage within a respective portion of the service area. The mobile unit wirelessly connects to at least two of the base stations (or sectors of the base stations) that transmit to the mobile unit via respective forward links at respective transmit levels. These respective transmit levels are based upon forward link requirements of the mobile unit. The mobile unit transmits to the at least two base stations/sectors via a respective plurality of reverse links. Forward link transmit levels may be determined based upon the quality of corresponding reverse link transmissions or from the quality of pilot signals or forward link transmissions received by the mobile unit. Forward link transmissions are made via the most favorable forward links (at least one) while transmissions are not made, or are made at reduced power levels on the least favorable forward links. During management of the wireless communication system, forward link transmissions are initiated and discontinued based upon the forward link transmission power requirements of the mobile unit. While managing the forward link transmissions, the forward link transmission power requirements of the mobile unit may be compared to a plurality of thresholds. When these thresholds are exceeded, the management requires altering which base stations make forward link transmissions and at what levels such transmissions are made. In a particular embodiment of the wireless communication system, the system operates according to a code division multiple access protocol.

摘要: A wireless communication system facilitates wireless communication with a mobile unit within a respective service area. The wireless communication system includes a mobile switching center and a plurality of base stations. Each base station couples to the mobile switching center and provides wireless communication within a respective cell or within a plurality of respective sectors. Each base station provides a pilot signal that may be received by the wireless mobile unit. With multiple sectors, a pilot signal is provided for each sector. The mobile unit may wirelessly connect to any of the base stations' cells and sectors. A determination of whether to be connected to a particular base station cell and/or base station sector is based upon the relative strengths of pilot signals received by the wireless mobile unit. The mobile unit may evaluate the relative strengths of received pilot signals and simply request a connection to a base station or a disconnection therefrom based upon the evaluation. However, the mobile unit may also notify the mobile switching center of strengths of received pilot signals with the mobile switching center taking action. In such case, the mobile switching center may determine thresholds and pass the thresholds to the mobile unit for later use, the thresholds based upon the relative strengths of the pilot signals. A corresponding method includes steps for operating a wireless communication system.
