    Abstract: A polycrystalline diamond compact includes a polycrystalline diamond material having a plurality of grains of diamond bonded to one another by inter-granular bonds and an intermetallic gamma prime (γ′) or κ-carbide phase disposed within interstitial spaces between the inter-bonded diamond grains. The ordered intermetallic gamma prime (γ′) or κ-carbide phase includes a Group VIII metal, aluminum, and a stabilizer. An earth-boring tool includes a bit body and a polycrystalline diamond compact secured to the bit body. A method of forming polycrystalline diamond includes subjecting diamond particles in the presence of a metal material comprising a Group VIII metal and aluminum to a pressure of at least 4.5 GPa and a temperature of at least 1,000° C. to form inter-granular bonds between adjacent diamond particles, cooling the diamond particles and the metal material to a temperature below 500° C., and forming an intermetallic gamma prime (γ′) or κ-carbide phase adjacent the diamond particles.

    Abstract: An apparatus for controlling fluid flow in a wellbore may include a valve disposed along a drill string. The valve includes a valve body having an internal chamber, a plurality of ports formed in the valve body, a ball disposed in the internal chamber, and an actuator operatively connected to the ball. The ball includes at least one flow bore. The actuator shifts the ball into at least a first position wherein the flow bore is in fluid communication with at least two of the plurality of ports, and a second position wherein the flow bore is isolated from at least one of the plurality of ports. A related method includes conveying a drill string having the above-described valve along the wellbore and controlling a flow of fluid by shifting the ball using the actuator.

    Abstract: Removing an asphaltene particle from a substrate includes contacting a silicate nanoparticle with a chemical group to form a functionalized silicate nanoparticle, the chemical group includes a first portion; and a second portion comprising a nonaromatic moiety, the first portion being bonded to the silicate nanoparticle; contacting the asphaltene particle with the functionalized silicate nanoparticle, the asphaltene particle being disposed on the substrate; interposing the functionalized silicate nanoparticle between the asphaltene particle and the substrate; and separating the asphaltene particle from the substrate with the functionalized silicate nanoparticle to remove the asphaltene particle. A composition includes a functionalized silicate nanoparticle comprising a reaction product of a silicate nanoparticle and a functionalization compound; and a fluid. The functionalization compound includes a chemical group that includes a first portion, the first portion being directly bonded to the silicate nanoparticle in the functionalized silicate nanoparticle; and a second portion including an aromatic moiety or a nonaromatic moiety.

    Abstract: A system and method for logging in a wellbore where sensor assemblies on a logging tool are deployed and landed in the wellbore. After the sensor assemblies are landed in the wellbore and released from the logging tool, the logging tool is pulled uphole. Moving the logging tool uphole from where the sensor assemblies are landed, reduces interference of the logging tool with measurements obtained with the sensor assemblies. The sensor assemblies include sensors for detecting fluid flow, pressure, temperature, fluid density, formation resistivity, and which can be mechanical, optical, acoustic, or electromagnetic.

    Abstract: A submersible well pump assembly includes a seal unit coupled between a pump and a motor. The seal unit has a forward guide member, a rearward guide member, and a labyrinth disc chamber connected between. The labyrinth disc chamber has an outer wall, a concentric guide tube and a number of axially spaced apart discs extending between the guide tube and the outer wall, defining cavities between the discs. Disc ports extend through the discs to communicate fluid between the cavities, the ports being at multiple angular locations relative to each other. A drive shaft extends through the guide tube, the forward guide member bore and the rearward guide member. The outer wall, the guide tube and the discs are made of a single-piece member.

    Abstract: A fastening apparatus includes a retaining member comprising a shape memory material configured to transform, responsive to application of a stimulus, from a first solid phase to a second solid phase. The retaining member is disposed within a hole in a body and secured within the hole by phase change which creates an interference fit to secure the retaining member against rotational and axial movement. The hole has a second axial cross-sectional shape. The retaining member has a first axial cross-sectional shape that is preferably either circular or rectangular.
