Abstract:
An oscillating or pulsing fluid stream, or flow, is produced from a flow of pressurized air by fluidic apparatus in a device configured for use in surface cleaning, sweeping, lawn care applications, and the like. A converging nozzle assembly defining a tapered internal lumen having a smooth narrowing profile is configured to generate at a power nozzle a high velocity stream with minimal pressure drop. Downstream of the power nozzle, first and second control ports are in fluid communication with the high velocity stream and with each other via an inertance loop having a lumen of selected cross sectional area and length. The varying air flow is directed through an outlet chamber shaped to produce an oscillating or a pulsating flow.

A check valve for use in a section of a liquid flow line to control the intermittent flow of a liquid through the line, wherein the section of the line that is configured to received the valve has inlet and outlet ends with an opening through which liquid respectively enters or exits the section, includes a compression spring having upstream and downstream ends, wherein the spring is configured so as to allow the downstream end to press against the section outlet end. This check valve further includes a piston having bottom, top and outer side surfaces, with this piston having a cavity that extends from its top surface and is configured to allow the spring to sit and operated freely within the cavity with the spring's upstream end resting on the bottom surface of the cavity. This piston also has an opening in its side surface that connects the cavity and its outer side surface, and the piston's bottom surface has a raised sealing surface with an outer boundary that is configured so as to allow the boundary to enclose the opening in the section's inlet end. This check valve operates by having its piston's bottom surface press against the section inlet end due to the action of the spring so as to seal around the opening of the inlet end. The piston is made from an elastomeric material so as to give the piston the elastic properties necessary to allow its bottom surface to act as a seal for the inlet opening.

An automatically alignable conformal, cup-shaped fluidic nozzle engineered to generate an oscillating spray is configured as a cylindrical cup having a substantially open proximal end and a substantially closed distal end wall with a centrally located power nozzle defined therein and between first and second distally projecting alignment tabs or wall segments. Optionally, the fluidic circuit's oscillation inducing geometry is molded directly into the sealing post's distal surface and a one-piece cup provides the discharge orifice.

A seat massager for massaging a person's back has, according to the present invention, a pair of inflatable, massage bladders configured so as to be received in close proximity to a person's back, each of said bladders having a front surface, with a portion of said front surfaces being overlayed so as to provide a rolling massage sensation when the bladders are inflated and deflated, a means for supplying fluid to the bladders, a fluidic having an inlet and two exhaust ports, a conduit that connects each of the fluidic exhaust ports to one of the pair of bladders, wherein the fluidic is configured so as to yield alternating flow from the exhaust ports that cyclically inflates and deflates each of the bladders so as to provide a massaging sensation to the back. This massager may further comprise: an inflatable support bladder positioned beneath a portion of the overlayed rear surfaces of the massage bladders, a means for supplying fluid to this support bladder so as to position the massage bladders in proximity to a person's back, and a carrier plate on which the fluid supply means are mounted, this plate being configured so as to aid in attaching the seat massager to the frame of a seat into which the seat massager is to be installed.

A fluidic oscillator capable of generating free fluid jets having distinctive, controllable and industrially/commercially useful flow patterns has a switching chamber having an inlet port that allows a pressurized fluid to enter and flow through the oscillator, an exhaust passage having a sidewall that forms one boundary wall of the switching chamber, a container passage having a sidewall that forms the second boundary wall of the switching chamber, a compliance member connected to the distal end of the container passage, and an expansion chamber connected to the distal end of the exhaust passage, with the expansion chamber having an exhaust orifice that allows fluid to flow from the oscillator. In operation, such an oscillator yields a contained fluid jet that issues from the inlet port into the swishing chamber and alternately switches its flow direction between the container and exhaust passages. This switching action serves to generate controllable pressure waves in the exhaust passage and expansion chamber which act to control the pattern of the free fluid jet that flows from the orifice.

Optionally, cup-shaped filtered orifice defining member also includes a fluidic circuit's oscillation inducing geometry molded into the cup or directly into the distal surface of a sealing post and the one-piece filter cup provides the fluidic circuit's discharge orifice.

An improved automotive pump assembly includes a volute pumping chamber configured to operably contain a rotatable impeller which, when driven, draws fluid into a fluid inlet and pumps the fluid to and through a fluid outlet. The volute chamber has an exterior sidewall with a constant internal first radius over a first sidewall portion and transitions to a second sidewall portion of increasing radius. The chamber's second sidewall portion defines a first end at a sidewall transition point tangent to the constant radius sidewall segment to define a second end which is tangent to the volute chamber's fluid outlet with a second radius that is greater than the first radius.
