A method for processing a composite digital audio broadcast signal to mitigate intermittent interruptions in the reception of the digital audio broadcast signal, the method comprising the steps of separating an analog audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal from a digital audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal, detecting errors in the digital audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal, adjusting the digital audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal in response to errors in the digital audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal to produce an adjusted digital audio portion, and blending the analog audio portion with the adjusted digital audio portion to produce an audio output. A receiver that performs the method is also included.

The invention uses a combination of an FFT, DFT bins, and three point interpolation to estimate a frequency of the carrier wave. The system is robust and compensates for multipath fading and other types of signal degradation.

A digital quadriphase-shift keying modulator is described which generates a modulated intermediate carrier frequency (IF) based on a desired number of samples for each input information bit. The design includes a ROM (or RAM) look-up table which stores digitized waveforms. The inphase and quadrature components of a complex baseband signal are translated to an IF at a multiple of the sampling rate simply by alternating the inphase and quadrature samples and alternating signs. The real IF output is produced by summing the inphase and quadrature signals.

A system and method for recovering a clock signal from digital data signals which do not include a separate clock signal. The system and method detect transitions from one logic state to the other logic state in the digital data signal, and compare the time alignment of these logic state transitions to an input clock signal from a voltage controlled oscillator. A correction control signal is generated as a function of the time alignment of the digital data signal transition with the input clock signal, and applied to the oscillator to vary the frequency of the clock signal as a function of the correction control signal, whereby a digital data recovered clock signal is aligned with the digital data signal.

A method is provided for coherently tracking a radio signal including a plurality of digitally modulated reference subcarriers. The method comprises the steps of receiving symbols transmitted on the reference subcarriers, combining the reference subcarrier symbols with a known reference sequence conjugate to produce a plurality of samples, median filtering the samples to produce filtered samples, and smoothing the samples for each of the reference subcarriers over the plurality of reference subcarriers to produce a coherent reference signal estimate for each of the subcarriers. A receiver for coherently tracking a radio signal including at least one digitally modulated reference carrier is also provided.
