摘要: In the production of carbon black from a hydrocarbon oil which is injected into a heat-insulated furnace 10 in atomized form, the oil feed tube is surrounded by a ring of orifices 32 which inject fuel gas into a spiral stream of oxygen-containing gas from a header 50, the resulting mixture being substantially completely burnt before reaching the oil spray. As shown in Fig. 3, the fuel gas is preheated by passage through an annular tube around an oil feed tube 21 to the end of said oil feed tube and then back through an outer annular tube to orifices 32. As shown the orifices are radial but they may be at an angle to the axis, or helical to impart a spinning motion. The make hydrocarbon may have a hydrogen to carbon ratio of 0.75-1.25, a mean molecular weight of 225-550, an A.P.I. gravity of not more than 10, a viscosity of more than 30 SSU, and a Conradson carbon residue of greater than 1.5. The hydrocarbon may be atomized with air, steam, a combustible or an inert gas. The fuel gas may be natural gas, coke oven gas, hydrogen or vaporized or atomized liquid hydrocarbon. The oxygen-containing gas may be air or oxygen diluted with tail gas or other inert gas. Specifications 627,872 and 699,406 are referred to.

摘要: Oil is freed from suspended impurities by mixing it with water or aqueous solutions, flowing the mixture downwardly through the mixing zone, abruptly changing its direction near the bottom of the zone whereby the water separates and the impurities collect at the interface, flowing the cleaned oil upwardly and either recoverin the cleaned oil or subjecting it to further similar downward and upward flow treatment. Water alone may be used, or up to about 10 per cent of additive may be used, e.g. sodium carbonate or silicate, acetic or citric acid or salts thereof, phosphates, soaps or synthetic detergents. As shown, contaminated oil enters at 54 and is sprayed with water 62. The mixture passes down in zone 12 and up in zone 14, sludge 84 separating at the interface between the mixture and the water which collects in the bottom. The partially cleaned oil is passed on through a further two compartments and more sludge is separated. The cleaned oil is removed by pump 60, water may be drained off at 40, 42, 44 and sludge removed by line 53. Additional water sprays may be provided over the second and third separating zones.

摘要: A substantially dustless, densified carbon black for use in lithographic and printing inks is prepared by tumbling carbon black, moistened with 2-12 per cent water, in a horizontally-mounted rotating drum containing a free roller equipped with at least two longitudinally spaced eccentric projections in the same radial plane, the black being charged to the drum to a depth not exceeding the diameter of the roller plus the height of the projections. The black, which may be wetted before, or after, charging, is fed through shoot 14 into pelleting drum 10 mounted on driven tyred wheels 12. As the drum rotates the roller 18, having projections 20, rotates in an eccentric path, rolling off legs 20, rolling across the bed of black, compacting the black without forming pellets, and rolling up on to legs, allowing black to slide beneath the roller. The product leaving by shoot 16 may be broken up in a high speed fan, or by brushing through a screen, and has a density of 16 lbs./cu. ft., or higher. The roller 18 may weigh 20-100 lbs./ft. Specification 475,847 is referred to.
