摘要: A flow control system is used in conjunction with a surgical handpiece for the removal of unwanted material in a very small enclosed operative site in which it is very critical to maintain a pressure within a certain range, such as in the surgical operation of the removal of a cataract lens from the human eye. The system includes an irrigation subsystem comprising a source of treatment fluid, such as an artificial aqueous solution, at a preselected constant pressure for supplying said fluid to the enclosed operative site via the handpiece. A suspension of the treatment fluid, including any unwanted material, is removed from the operative site by an aspiration subsystem. The aspiration subsystem comprises a pump used to remove the suspension and to overcome the friction and other losses throughout the entire fluid system, a flow transducer for measuring the rate of flow, and a vent valve to reduce the flow in the aspiration subsystem when necessary to assist in maintaining a relatively constant pressure within the operative site. An electronic flow control receives signals from the flow transducer and reacts to certain changes in flow signals by sending a signal to the venting valve.

摘要: An instrument for breaking apart and removal of unwanted material, especially suitable for surgical operations such cataract removal, including a handheld instrument having an operative tip vibrating at a frequency in the ultrasonic range with an amplitude controllable up to several thousandths of an inch. The operative tip is itself hollow and is in turn surrounded by a tubular sleeve to form an annular passage. The handpiece includes transducer means for converting a high frequency alternating current into mechanical vibrations and an impedance transformer for coupling these vibrations to the operative tips. Connections are also provided on the handpiece to a source of treatment fluid and a pump. The treatment fluid may be coupled to either the hollow interior of the tool or the surrounding annular passage, while the pump is coupled to the other. During use, the vibration of the operative tip against the tissue to be removed causes the latter to break apart into small particles which are then dispersed in the fluid flowing over the operative region. Concurrently, the pump withdraws the suspension of the tissue particles in the fluid from the operative site. The fluid flow must be regulated so as to control the pressure within limits at the operative site. The instrument is thus suitable for removing tissue from an enclosed area whereby the opening to permit access to the tissue to be removed need only be large enough to admit the tip of the operative tool.

摘要: A contactless activity and respiration monitor is described which includes a resilient, capacitive pad, which may be a mattress, or a pad used with a mattress, having a capacitor therein responsive to the activity or respiration of a body lying on it. Electronic capacitance sensing circuitry is disclosed which provides an indication or alarm in the event of excessive activity or apnea, or low or high respiration rate. Readouts of respiration rate, and number of events of activity may also be provided. Circuits are disclosed for filtering out large static or relatively long term changes in the capacitance of the capacitive pad while maintaining the high sensitivity necessary to sense movements caused by respiration.

The three components are designed for ease in assembly and disassembly for cleaning. The gas and liquid are uniformly mixed prior to depositing the liquid onto and spreading the liquid over a target surface for the final atomization.

摘要: A feedback coil is placed in surrounding relation to a magnetostrictive member which is vibrating under the influence of a drive coil being energized by a power amplifier. Ideally, the voltage induced in the feedback coil should be proportional only to the vibrational amplitude of the magnetostrictive member. The induced voltage is fed back to the input of the power amplifier insuring that the member is vibrating at one of its resonant frequencies. The feedback coil is designed so that there is no transformer coupling between the feedback and drive coils. The feedback coil can be positioned along the length of the device in one of two ways, so as to maximize the induced voltage. Each way relies on a different magnetostrictive effect.
