This invention relates to porous polytetrafluoroethylene (hereinafter PTFE) materials having the property of rapid recovery and a method for producing these materials. The microstructure of the porous PTFE material consists of nodes interconnected by fibrils, substantially all of the fibrils having a bent or wavy appearance. Articles made from these materials are particularly suitable for use in the medical field, but are also useful in other areas such as filtration and fabric applications.

The invention comprises an oriented multi-layer film having a different orientation distribution between at least two layers and a novel process for forming oriented multi-layer films having a different orientation distribution between the layers. An important feature is the formation of a first tubular layer which is folded and fed into the interior of a second tubular layer of smaller diameter. Upon inflation of the inner tubular layer of larger diameter to its maximum unstretched diameter the smaller diameter outer tubular layer will be stretched and will also be oriented if the stretching occurs while the temperature of the smaller diameter outer tubular layer is maintained within the orientation temperature range of that material.

A plastic pipe part 1 is pushed across a head part 3 of a sealing sleeve 4, being supported by a support 8, thereby providing the plastic pipe part with a widened end 7. Subsequently the widened end is surrounded by an outer mold 11 with three successive widenings 12, 14, 15 and by means of a fluid pressure in the interior of the widened end 7, sealed by the head part 3, the widened end is provided with three socket end widenings 28, 22, 29. After removal of the support 8 the end portion 6 of the socket end is inwardly rebent around the head part 3 thus forming a groove chamber 5 retaining the head part 3 of sealing sleeve 4. Pushing the plastic pipe part across the head part is facilitated by applying a fluid pressure. An apparatus for performing this method comprises an outer mold 5 with three successive mold widenings 12, 14, 15, a first mandrel 20, a second mandrel 21, a third mandrel 30, a fourth mandrel 31, a removable support mandrel 8, a rebending member 26 and a supply conduit 10 for supplying a fluid under pressure in the space between outer mold 11 and the mandrels 30, 20, 21.

A high-orientation multilayered film incorporates at least one cold drawn, highly oriented resin layer excellent in mechanical strength and suitable mainly for use as packaging material. Because of its specific stratal construction which is highly adaptable to afford a wide variety of specific functions, the composite film is suitable for manufacture of thermally shrinkable films which excel in transparency and in ability to shrink rapidly particularly at low temperatures. Also disclosed is a process for drawing at specific low temperatures at high expansion ratios the aforementioned multiplicity of resin layers either all by themselves or in conjunction with layers of other resins by utilizing the cold drawability of the aforementioned resin layers excelling in mechanical strength.

A process for making piezo-electric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film for use, for example, as diaphragms for telephone transmitters, includes the steps of: (a) stretching the melt-extruded film parallel to the extrusion direction with a stretch ratio of about 4 to 1 at about 120.degree. C. to convert it to a .beta. crystalline form; (b) clamping the film between conductive rubber pads to which the polarizing voltage, e.g. 1.3 kv for 12 .mu.m film is applied. While the voltage is thus applied, the film is heated to about 110.degree. C. for 130 mins. and cooled to ambient with the polarizing filed preset; (c) conductive elastomer electrodes are applied to the film in the desired pattern; and (d) the piezo-electric properties are stabilized by heating the foil to about 90.degree. C. for 2 hours.

This invention relates to an improvement in an externally held cylindrical expander for tubular ware with a central support for radially adjustable, spreading rest means and sector-shaped longitudinal elements borne by said rest means, in particular for the treatment of the tubular ware with liquid treatment means, the longitudinal elements extending between bodies tapering in the longitudinal direction, mounted between the ends of the support, and acting as entry and exit means, the improvement comprising: (a) rollers with axes of rotation transverse to the ware transport direction T mounted on the outsides of the individual longitudinal elements in transverse planes of the expander, (b) the rollers located in a common transverse plane covering the gaps between rollers located in an adjoining transverse plane, (c) the rollers from adjoining transverse planes mounted on one longitudinal element overlap by their ends at the center of the longitudinal element, (d) the other ends of the rollers project beyond the side edges of the longitudinal element and overlap with the rollers of the adjoining longitudinal element, and (e) the rollers evince a convex profile of such kind that the convex curvature of all rollers located in a common transverse plane on the expander periphery coincides with the smallest settable circumference of the expander in its unspread position.
