Abstract:
A solvent delivery system which provides a substantially uniform flow includes two synchronized pistons adapted to serially transport successive solvent compositions from one piston to the other prior to delivery to a chromatography column.
Abstract:
A calcium hydroxide unit-dose multi-package and method of forming the package that includes sealed chambers or compartments each containing a capsule having a connected needle forming a nozzle which is open at the discharge end. The capsule is pre-filled with a predetermined amount of calcium hydroxide formulation that is confined within the capsule by an end plug that functions as a piston to extrude the calcium hydroxide formulation from the capsule and directly to the tooth when used. Disposed within the sealed chamber or compartment containing the capsule, is a quantity of preservative liquid or distilled water saturated with calcium hydroxide to prevent dehydration or decomposition of the calcium hydroxide formulation in the capsule during shipping or storage. The multi-package with the capsule and liquid sealed therein can be sterilized by gamma radiation to ensure sterility of the calcium hydroxide and to prevent growth in the sealed container. The multi-packaged is formed as a tray having multiple chambers, each of which contains pre-loaded capsules and a quantity of preservative liquid whereby the respective chambers are sealed by an overlying cover sheet.
Abstract:
A pulse damper for use in a liquid chromatographic solvent delivery system includes a cavity within a housing containing a compliant medium. The compliant medium being an elastomer. As a consequence, a solvent flow volume can be precisely formed and maintained.
Abstract:
A high pressure check valve assembly includes a ceramic cage loosely fitted into the bore of a body so as to leave at least a partial clearance between the cage and the body. A passage through the cage includes a retaining section adjacent a fluid inlet end for loosely containing a ball and an irregular cross-section adjacent the retaining section so as to obstruct the ball without hindering fluid flow forwardly through the passage. The cage further has a lateral bleed hole between the passage and the clearance to equalize fluid pressure. An outlet-end sealing member is press fitted into the bore against the outlet end of the cage. An oversized resilient washer-shaped inlet-end sealing member is press fitted into the bore against the inlet end of the cage to seal and retain the assembly. This member has a central aperture with a washer shaped seat member fitted therein, the seat member functioning with the ball as the check valve.
Abstract:
A transducer for measuring extremely small rates of flow of a liquid under high pressure. A transparent tube has a small channel within which is contained a ball having a diameter substantially that of the channel. The tube is housed in a pressure vessel in such a manner that the high pressure liquid to be measured surrounds the tube over most of its length. The liquid flows externally of the tube toward the inlet end of the channel, thereby equalizing the pressure differential within and without the tube. As the fluid passes through the channel from the inlet to the outlet, it propels the ball past a sensor, such as a photoelectric device. The velocity of the ball past the sensor indicates the volumetric flow rate of the fluid. The device is periodically reset by momentarily reversing the direction of flow through the tube to return the ball to its starting position.

A calcium hydroxide package and method of forming the package that includes a sealed vial containing a capsule having a connected needle forming a nozzle which is open at the discharge end. The capsule is prefilled with a predetermined amount of calcium hydroxide formulation that is confined within the capsule by an end plug that functions as a piston to extrude the calcium hydroxide formulation from the capsule and directly to the tooth when used. Disposed within the sealed vial containing the capsule, prefilled with the calcium hydroxide formulation, is a quantity of preservative liquid or distilled water saturated with calcium hydroxide to prevent dehydration or decomposition of the calcium hydroxide formulation during shipping or storage, and wherein the vial with the capsule and liquid sealed therein can be subsequently sterilized by gamma radiation to ensure sterility of the calcium hydroxide and to prevent growth in the sealed container containing distilled water. In another form of the invention, the packaged is formed as a tray having multiple chambers, each of which contains pre-loaded capsules and a quantity of preservative liquid whereby the respective chambers are sealed by an overlying cover sheet.
Abstract:
A liquid pump motor control for a liquid chromatograph. The control detects when the pump needs to be refilled. Then, the pump motor is accelerated at a first rate for a given number of pulses. Then the motor is accelerated at substantially its maximum rate until a selected maximum speed is reached. Thereafter the speed is maintained at its maximum until the time calculated to begin deceleration. The motor is then decelerated substantially at its maximum deceleration rate until the speed is close to the final desired speed. Then deceleration occurs at a slower rate for a fixed number of pulses. The number of pulses applied to the stepping motor from the beginning of acceleration until the end of deceleration is constant regardless of the beginning or ending pulse rates.
