Abstract:
A gas turbine engine has an annular reverse-flow combustor with a combustor inner liner enclosing a combustion chamber. The inner liner having a dome portion at an upstream end of the combustor and a downstream combustor exit defined between a small exit duct portion and a large exit duct portion. At least one of the dome portion, the small exit duct portion and the large exit duct portion is made of a separately formed hemi-toroidal shell composed of a ceramic matrix composite.
Abstract:
A composition for manufacturing a composite of a non-oxide ceramic matrix and a refractory phase within the non-oxide ceramic matrix includes a preceramic polymer for forming a non-oxide ceramic matrix and a refractory material dispersed within the preceramic polymer.
Abstract:
A ceramic matrix composite part having elongated cooling channels within the wall thereof is manufactured by inserting decomposable inserts within a woven ceramic fiber preform. The inserts are tows of continuous carbon fibers surrounded by a carbonaceous filler, and are inserted where the channels are desired. The preform, with the inserts in place, is disposed within a mold. A ceramic matrix material is added and the fiber preform is consolidated with the ceramic matrix material. The consolidated part is then heated to thermally decompose the inserts to create the elongated channels within the part. The inserts may be flexible and woven into the preform using an automated weaving loom, or they may have limited flexibility and be inserted by machine or by hand.
Abstract:
A process for applying an oxidation resistant coating to an article includes the steps of mixing at least about 10% by volume to up to about 99% by volume of a slurry at least one silica based material having a viscosity of about 1×102 poise to about 1×107 poise at a temperature of about 1,292° F. (700° C.) to about 3,272° F. (1,800° C.) at least about 1% by volume to up to about 90% by volume of the slurry at least one oxygen scavenger, and a liquid medium to form the slurry; coating an article with the slurry to form a slurry coated article; and heat treating under an inert atmosphere the slurry coated article to form an article having at least one oxidation resistant coating layer containing the at least one oxygen scavenger.
Abstract:
An apparatus includes an inlet conduit assembly surrounding a gas flow path and a combustor arranged downstream of the inlet conduit assembly. The inlet conduit assembly includes a thermoelectric (TE) device configured to convert heat into electrical energy, a gas flow conduit arranged between the gas flow path and the TE device, and a resilient member configured to bias the TE device into contact with the gas flow conduit.
Abstract:
A first member is retained to a second member to resist separation in a first direction. A joint comprises a first recess in the first member. The first member comprises at least a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) substrate. The joint comprises at least one ceramic key partially accommodated in the first recess and engaging the second member. The second member comprises at least a metallic substrate.

Abstract:
A combustor assembly includes a metal section having an axial slot that receives a ceramic section. A clamp is received about the axial slot to secure the metal section and ceramic section together. Tabs on the metal section, a gasket between the metal section and the ceramic section, and springs within the clamp deform an amount that is greater than a thermal expansion difference between the metal section and the ceramic section to maintain a clamping force of the clamp.
Abstract:
A fastener system provides an internal pocket within a CMC component into which a fastener is inserted through an internal pocket opening and loaded to secure the CMC structure to a support structure.
Abstract:
A reverse flow combustor has an inlet end. A flowpath extends downstream from the inlet end through a turn. The turn directs the flowpath radially inward and reversing an axial flow direction. A large exit duct (LED) is along the turn. A small exit duct (SED) is along the turn and joined by a joint to a mounting structure to resist separation in a first axial direction. The joint comprises: a first surface on the SED facing partially radially inward; and a mounting feature engaging the first surface.
