Abstract:
An improved aqueous cathodic electrocoating composition having a binder of an epoxy-amine adduct and a blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent; wherein the improvement is the incorporation of an anticrater agent which is a polyoxyalkylene diamine having a number average molecular weight of about 700-5,000 by reacting it with the epoxy resin of the epoxy-amine adduct; wherein the amine to epoxy equivalence ratio of amine groups of the polyoxyalkylene diamine to epoxy groups of the epoxy resin of the epoxy amine adduct is within the range of 0.01-0.90 to 1 and the resulting epoxy amine adduct has a number average molecular weight of about 1,500-20,000; where the above molecular weights are determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) using polystyrene as the standard.
Abstract:
A method of preventing the yellowing of the outermost coating of a multicoat coating system is disclosed. The method comprises initially depositing onto a conductive substrate by cathodic electrodeposition a primer coating comprising at least one layer of an amine-epoxy resin adduct and a cross-linking agent, and then curing said primer to a hard, durable film. Then, depositing a second coating onto the primer layer comprising at least one layer of a pigmented film-forming basecoat. Then depositing a third outermost coating onto the second coating comprising at least one layer of a clear, film-forming topcoat, and then curing the basecoat and topcoat. The primer coating contains a cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of aliphatic polyisocyanates containing at least six carbon atoms, the isocyanurates of aliphatic polyisocyanates containing at least six carbon atoms, aromatic polyisocyanates having a molecular weight greater than 174, and the isocyanurates of aromatic diisocyanates having a molecular weight greater than 174. The polyisocyanates or isocyanurates are blocked with a blocking agent.
Abstract:
Improved electrodepositable resin compositions comprising the reaction product of an epoxide, and, the reaction product of a ketone and an alkanolamine. The introduction of a primary monoamine into the epoxide molecule can be simultaneously done, optionally, with chain extension. The resin compositions can also be used as grind resins.
Abstract:
An aqueous coating composition having a pH of 6.0–10.0 comprises 30% to 70% by weight of film-forming binder and correspondingly 70% to 30% by weight of an aqueous liquid carrier for the binder; wherein the binder comprises a. 20% to 95% by weight, based on the weight of the binder, of a urethane oligomer having a weight average molecular weight of 300 to 2500 and having acid functionality and neutralized with an amine and to form a water-dispersible product; and b. 5% to 80% by weight, based on the weight of the binder, of a water-compatible alkylated melamine formaldehyde crosslinking agent; finishes formed from the composition have good gloss and distinctness of image and excellent acid etch and mar resistance.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a low gloss crosslinkable coating composition that produces a low gloss coating upon cure. The crosslinkable composition includes a binder component and a crosslinking agent. The binder component includes a combination of at least two partially compatible crosslinkable components retained in an evaporable medium, such that the low gloss coating exhibits a 60° specular gloss that is at least 5% lower than gloss of coatings from coating compositions containing any one of the crosslinkable components. The low gloss coating composition of the present invention is especially suited for OEM and refinish automotive coating applications, such as automotive fenders and automotive side boards, typically used in sport utility vehicles.
Abstract:
A cathodic electrodepositable resin particularly adapted for use as a grind resin to form a pigment paste. The resin is the reaction product of an aliphatic polyepoxide and a polyether primary amine. The resin composition has anti-foaming properties, is stable in the aqueous dispersion, and contributes to high film build.
Abstract:
Acrylosilane polymers containing vinyl silanes are prepared by copolymerizing vinyl alkoxy silane monomers predominantly with, or in the alternative, only with acrylate monomers. The polymer so prepared can be used as the main component in the acid etch resistant solvent borne coating compositions and in particular in clear coating compositions for clear coat/color coat finishes for automobiles and trucks.
Abstract:
The present invention provides for an etch and mar resistant low VOC clear coating composition most suitable for use as a top clear coat in multi-layered OEM or refinish automative coatings. The coating composition includes isocyanate, silane and melamine components. The isocyanate component includes an aliphatic polyisocyanate. The composition may be formulated as a two-pack or one-pack coating composition, wherein the isocyanante functionalities are blocked with a blocker such as a mono-alcohol.
