The plurality of antenna elements are organized in an array and configured to form a non-planar shaped antenna array surface. Each of the plurality of antenna elements is switchable to one of a plurality of phase shift states. The phase-shift switching circuitry is configured to switch each of the plurality of antenna elements to one of the plurality of phase shift states based on phase control signals. In an example, the phase-shift switching circuitry switches a first set of antenna elements to a first phase shift state and switches at least a second set of antenna elements to a second phase shift state to steer an antenna beam in a direction.

    摘要: An improved constellation pruning and partial Gray coding method for generating constellations that are transmitted by a transmitter. The approximate symbol error rate (SER) for each possible subconstellation is first determined. Then, each of the subconstellations are scaled in terms of power so that each subconstellation has the same symbol error rate. Then, the subconstellation that requires the least amount of power to generate is selected as the pruned constellation for use by the transmitter. After the pruned constellation is determined, it is then coded a single time, and this coded pruned constellation is used by the transmitter.

    摘要: A phased array antenna (PAA) that is particularly adapted to accommodate communications with low earth orbiting (LEO) satellites includes three antenna faces which comprise a phased array of radiating elements, each antenna face is triangular and the three faces form a triangular pyramid. Each triangular face has a height h and a base length B. B and h are chosen to optimize the antenna's gain variation with beam elevation angle to compensate for the path losses dependent on beam elevation angle. At low elevation, increased free space loss in incurred due to longer range to a low earth orbiting satellite, and more rain and atmospheric loss is incurred due to longer path through the atmosphere compared with the losses at higher elevations or at zenith. Since the intrinsic shape compensates for the elevation dependent losses, the PAA design minimizes total array area compared with other known geometries and thus exhibits lower cost.

    摘要: Digital signals are converted to phase and amplitude altered, periodic, analog signals and emplaced on an output link. The system is adaptive and includes a plurality of simple quadrature phase shift keying modulators, each modulator having a plurality of controlling digital inputs, the states of which determine which of a plurality of phase displaced signals will be outputted. A local oscillator provides a periodic sinusoidal signal to each QPSK modulator. Summing circuits combine the outputs of the modulators so as to produce a constellation of phase and amplitude-displaced output sinusoidal signals. A processor/mapper combination enables conversion of a first set of digital inputs to a different set of digital outputs in accordance with a control input. Thus, the processor enables the alteration of the constellation of outputs in accordance with a control input, which may be indicative of the condition of a transmission facility.

    摘要: A delay element and method for delaying an RF/microwave signal. The delay element uses a laser and an RF modulator to modulate a laser beam using an applied RF/microwave input signal. Collimating optics collimate the modulated laser beam and couple the beam to a delay element that controllably delays the modulated laser beam and hence the RF/microwave signal. The delay element has fixed retroreflectors, moveable retroreflectors disposed on a moveable armature or permanent magnet, and a coil disposed on a spring and coupled to the moveable armature. The beam is reflected multiple times between the fixed and multiple moveable retroreflectors. A dash pot may be used to suppress mechanical oscillation of the permanent magnet and moveable retroreflectors. A delay control current source supplies current to the coil to control movement of the moveable retroreflectors and thus the path length and delay experienced by the modulated laser beam. An RF detector detects and recovers the RF input signal to provide a delayed RF output signal from the delay element.
