In accordance with the present invention, there are provided solar water pasteurizers that are portable, efficient, inexpensive and easy to use. In its simplest form, the solar pasteurizer includes a transparent container such as a bag or envelope that contains at least one energy converting structure and has sufficient insulation to enable heating water to a temperature of at least 65° C. (and preferably to a temperature of at least 70° C.) for a time sufficient to achieve pasteurization (at 65-70° C., a period of only about 6 minutes is required for pasteurization). Invention solar pasteurizers are particularly useful for pasteurizing water. In additional embodiments, invention solar pasteurizers include additional features, such as, for example, a water pasteurization indicator, and a receptacle for retaining same within the invention container. In accordance with another embodiment of the invention, there are provided methods for pasteurizing water employing solar pasteurizers described herein, as well as kits suitable to convert any transparent water tight container into a solar water pasteurizer.

A silver glass paste consists of 60-75% silver flake having a tap density greater than 2.8 gm/cc and less than 5.0 gm/cc. The silver flake has a poly-modal flake size distribution. The paste further consists of 12-20% glass frit, 0.5-2% of a suitable organic resin and 8-20% of a suitable organic solvent. The resin may be acrylic and the organic solvent may be an ester alcohol or an ester alcohol mixed with a glycol ether or glycol ether ester.

Silver flake and lead borate glass frit are suspended in a liquid organic vehicle of resin and solvent. The silver flakes are present in two different size ranges. The plate is applied between the silicon die and the substrate and is oven fired to provide a bond that accommodates the different coefficients of thermal expansion of the silicon and ceramic substrate. The smaller silver particles improve the sintering of the silver and glass and thereby increase the bond strength while the larger silver particles minimize undersirable shrinkage and cracking of the resultant bond. Silver oxide particles or a special solvent mixture are also used in the paste.

The enclosure assembly includes a transparent conical dome (20) covering a collection reservoir (18) and an inner float ring (16). The evaporation assembly is placed in the center of the inner float ring. During operation, solar radiation induces water to evaporate from the evaporation assembly. The water vapor is then condensed and collected by the enclosure assembly.
