Abstract: An annulus filler system bridges the gap between two adjacent blades attached to a rim of the rotor disc of a gas turbine engine. The system includes an annulus filler having a lid which extends between the adjacent blades and defines an airflow surface for air being drawn through the engine. The filler also has a support body extending beneath the lid and terminating in an elongate foot which, in use, extends along a groove provided in the rim of the disc. The groove has a neck which prevents withdrawal of the foot through the neck in a radially outward direction of the disc. The system further includes a sleeve which, after installation of the filler, is slidably locatable into a gap between the foot and sides of the groove.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a bearing assembly (1) for a rotatable shaft (2). The bearing assembly comprises a bearing housing (10); a bearing (20) located within the bearing housing (10) and arranged in use to receive a rotatable shaft (2); and an elongate member (14) that couples the bearing (20) to the bearing housing (10) for damping vibrations of the rotatable shaft (2). The elongate member (14) comprises a piezoelectric element (40) which may be actuated so as to exert a force on the elongate member. This arrangement allows the bearing assembly to damp vibrations of the rotatable shaft.

Abstract: A rotor blade comprising a core blade section; and a trailing edge section, the trailing edge section being attached to the core blade section along a join interface. The trailing edge section comprises a shape memory material which is actuable so as to cause selective deformation of the trailing edge section between a first condition in which a trailing edge of the trailing edge section follows a substantially smooth profile and a second condition in which the trailing edge is perturbed. The direction of the perturbation may be oblique or perpendicular to the direction of flow over the blade in use. The rotor blade may be a fan or propeller for a gas turbine engine.

Abstract: A lubrication system comprises a reservoir for lubricant, lubricant delivery means to deliver lubricant to at least one component to be lubricated, an injector associated with each component, a control system to control the opening and closing of each injector and scavenge means to remove surplus lubricant from around each component and return it to the reservoir. Each injector comprises a pulsative injector, controlled by the control system to deliver lubricant to its associated component in a series of discrete pulses. In a preferred embodiment both the delivery of oil to each component and the scavenging of oil from each component are controlled in response to sensed conditions of that component.

Abstract: A leakage drain is used to provide an indication that leakage of a fluid has occurred within an engine. Previously, such leakage was detected by visual inspection of a retained drop at the outlet of a drain. With the present invention, a sensor arrangement comprising electrodes is located within or about the leakage drain whereby leakage fluid creates a film across those electrodes. Relative presence or absence or thickness of film causes variation in a detected electrical response (capacitance, reactance, resistance or impedance) and this variation is utilized in order to determine whether fluid leakage has occurred. Additionally, by time of flight analysis using electrostatic sensors it is possible to determine fluid flow rate. By analysis at different incident frequencies, a characteristic response for a particular type of leakage fluid is obtained. Thus, it is possible to deduce the type of leakage fluid as well as the rate of leakage. A single leakage drain may be utilized for a number of different leakage fluid types.

Abstract: A gas turbine engine (10) is provided with a plurality of shafts (18, 19, 20) interconnecting its compressor portions (11, 12, 13) with its turbine portions (15, 16, 17). Each shaft (18, 19, 20) is supported in the hotter part of the engine by electromagnetic bearings (26, 28, 32) and by rolling element bearings (24, 27, 29, 31, 33) in the remainder of the engine (10). The arrangement provides a simplified liquid lubrication system for the rolling element bearings (24, 27, 29, 31, 33) which reduces the likelihood of lubricant thermal degradation of the lubricant.

Abstract: A joint assembly includes a first component with a flange containing a plurality of spaced through-holes; a second component with a joining portion having an end surface which faces the flange and containing a plurality of spaced elongate cavities; and a plurality of fixation devices. Each cavity extends into the joining portion from the end surface in alignment with one of the through-holes. Each fixation device includes: a bolt which extends through a respective through-hole and the corresponding cavity, and includes a nut which is embedded within the joining portion at the corresponding cavity to receive the bolt such that on tightening the nut and bolt a clamping force is exerted across the flange and the end surface to join the first and second components together. Under axial loads less than that causing bolt failure, each fixation device is deformable to remove the clamping force.
