    Abstract: A chemical detonator includes a housing, having an open end and a closed end; and a detonation element located in the housing, into which a shock tube for initiating the detonation element intrudes, wherein the housing and the shock tube are of plastics construction and the housing is substantially cylindrical cup shape, and wherein the shock tube intrudes into, and is welded to, the open end to hold the shock tube at a desired spacing from the detonation element. The detonator includes a detonation element that includes a series of charges.

    Abstract: In a method of isolating a polymer blend from solution, a homogeneous solution including a poly(arylene ether), a poly(alkenyl aromatic), and a solvent is combined with an anti-solvent to form a dispersion containing solid particles. The solid particles have improved handling properties compared to particles formed from precipitation of the poly(arylene ether) alone.

    Abstract: A vertical axis wind turbine with a turbine rotor with rotor blades disposed for rotation about a substantially vertical axis. The turbine includes multiple vertically extending stator vanes circumferentially spaced apart about the rotor in an annular array. Each vane has a radially inward facing surface, a radially outward facing surface and a flange on an outer edge of each vane. The flange serves to create a turbulent swirling boundary layer on the vane surfaces that rotates in a direction that draws and redirects air flow into the air flow channels defined by the stator vanes that is then compressed by the narrowing of the channels and directed to the rotor blades to drive the turbine.

    Abstract: An improved swab applicator is provided including a swab connected to an elongate stick. The swab applicator further includes a sleeve encapsulating the swab and stick including a handle portion, receptacle portion and transition portion. The handle portion is preferably hollow and cylindrical in shape extending a substantial part around the length of the stick, while the receptacle portion of the sleeve is also hollow and cylindrically shaped having a substantially greater cross section than the handle portion. Meanwhile, the transition portion is preferably hollow and fristo conically shaped to connect the handle portion to the receptacle portion of the sleeve. The transition portion is substantially non-deformable when the receptacle portion of the sleeve is compressed creating a significant level of sheer stress to be imparted between the receptacle portion and transition portion of the sleeve causing the receptacle portion to sever from the rest of the sleeve.
