Non-volatile flip-flops (NVFFs) based circuitries and schemes that incorporate magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are provided to ensure fast data storage and restoration from an intentional or unintentional power outage. The NVFFs based circuitries and schemes also include enhanced scan mode testing capability by exploiting the nonvolatile latch to function as hold latch for delay testing. The NVFFs based circuitries and schemes eliminate additional write drivers, and may operate at an operation frequency of, for example, up to 2 GHz at a supply voltage of 1.1 V and with 0.55 pJ of energy consumption. A near uniform write latency can be achieved through transistor sizing, given write asymmetry of MTJs. NVFFs based circuitries and schemes incorporating data-dependent power gating circuitries can be used to mitigate high static currents generated during retention and back-to-back writing of identical input data.

A meal activity sensing apparatus collects sensor data detected through a plurality of pressure sensors installed in a smart meal mat, filters the collected sensor data, measures a pressure variance by using the filtered sensor data, determines whether a meal activity has taken place by comparing the measured pressure variance with a preset threshold value, and transmits meal activity information associated with the meal activity to an information processor communicating with the smart meal mat via radio frequency. Since this provides an advantage of more accurate detection of the meal activity, it can be useful in care services for eldercare facilities and for elderly individuals living alone, and further, in the efficient observance of an individual's daily meal patterns.

Embodiments of the present invention may provide an apparatus and a method for transmitting and receiving a random access channel (RACH) in a single carrier-frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) system. A frequency domain RACH signal may be mapped to a localized sub-frequency band of an entire frequency band available to the SC-FDMA system. A guard band including at least one sub carrier may be allocated between the RACH signal band and other channel signal bands. A guard time may be allocated between the RACE signal and other channel signals in the time domain. The RACH signal may include a short message including information related to a mobile station. The RACH signal may be detected in a frequency based method, a time based method or a sliding matched filter based method. Receiver complexity can be decreased if the RACH signal includes a CAZAC code sequence for a preamble. In such a case, a receive delay may be simply calculated and then adjusted more accurately.
