Abstract: A surgical stapler having a tissue spacer at its forward end. The spacer is inserted between lateral sides of a wound to be closed and holds the tissue on lateral sides of the wound apart while the tines of a staple are driven into the tissue margins and bent around the staple bending surface of the staple anvil to draw the tissue captured between the tines toward each other. The tissue spacer has a width greater than the width of the staple bending surface of the anvil and less than the distance between the tines of the staple in an unbent condition such that when inserted between lateral sides of the wound it will space the facing tissue margins of the wound apart a distance sufficient to provide a metered amount of tissue lateral sides of the wound that will be captured between the tines and drawn together as the tines are bent toward each other to close the wound without crushing or overlapping of the captured tissue.

Abstract: A bridge type switching transistor inverter circuit for driving high power AC loads such as arc discharge lamps from a DC electrical energy source. Four switching transistors are arranged in bridge configuration that the load may be connected alternately in the inverter circuit between diagonal pairs of switching transistors. Each switching transistor is included in a switching amplifier whose response time is short as compared with the response characteristic of the load and the AC cycle period. A single driver circuit is coupled to the respective switching amplifiers by photocouple isolation means through an electro-optically coupled light emitter-sensor pair. A clock pulse generator provides the necessary signal to the driver circuit which includes a phase splitter driver. A two-stage amplifier receives the signal from the sensor transistor of the photocouple and amplifies it to drive the switching transistor which is, in the preferred embodiment, a power darlington device of the monolithic type.

Abstract: A circuit arrangement for starting a linear metal halide arc discharge lamp while in a transistor switching bridge inverter circuit. A pulse generator is electrically connected to a trigger electrode which is mounted in close proximity to the lamp for supplying pulsed high voltage. The trigger electrode is capacitively coupled to the lamp for supplying pulsed high voltage for starting the lamp. A first logic gate is connected in circuit between a pulse width modulator and a phase splitter driver and is responsive to lamp current to lock the driver in a constant mode until the lamp starts. A second logic gate is connected to the pulse generator and is responsive to lamp current to inhibit the generator when the lamp is on. The pulse width modulator produces, when enabled, a variable pulse train having a fast rise and fall time. This variable pulse train is delivered to the phase splitter driver within which is developed the signal for driving the inverter. A differential amplifier is responsive to the differences in light sensed at opposite ends of the lamp and is connected to the pulse width modulator to control its operation.

Abstract: A smooth stable viscous gelled printing ink composition comprising a mixture of water, a gelling agent, a chelating agent, and a colorant or pigment, property enhancing additives evenly dispersed into the mixture, and an alkaline electrolyte viscosity increasing agent that raises the pH of the mixture and forms a smooth homogeneous stable gel with a viscosity level having the consistency of a custard or jelly. In addition to the colorants or pigments, additives may also include drying oils, resins, surfactants, film forming components, water flight agents, and other additives. The stabilized gel prevents separation and settling of the homogeneously suspended colorants, pigments, and property enhancing additives, and significantly improves storage stability. The ink compositions do not require shaking, stirring, or mixing prior to use are fast drying on paper, and do not dry on the printing press, in the storage containers, or in the ink jet or bubble jet injector nozzles. The gelled ink compositions with property enhancing additives also have improved non rub-off characteristics, excellent printability, high color strength, good water balance, less mist, and sharp halftone reproduction.

Abstract: A viscous breakable gel additive carrier for mixing with ion containing materials, including dry powder based and calciferous materials, which in its uniform homogeneous gel form, prevents separation and settling of the additives prior to mixing and is easily measurable, and upon mixing with the ion containing materials liquefies and becomes totally and evenly miscible to allow easy and precise mixing to produce uniform homogeneous mortars, grouts, stuccos and other compositions. The gel includes a predetermined amount of selected additives thoroughly mixed with a cross-linked polyacrylic acid gelling agent, an organic chelating agent, and an alkaline electrolyte, and prior to mixing with ion containing materials, has a consistency of a custard or jelly.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides for a novel pig design and method of retrieval based on thermal ablation. The pig comprises an external layer and an inner core, where the inner core further comprises at least one incendiary charge comprising at least one exothermic material. When ignited via an ignition source, the incendiary charge releases the exothermic material into one or more thermal dispersion channels. The exothermic material melts the interior of these thermal dispersion channels thereby distributing the exothermic material throughout the pig device causing its destruction via thermal ablation. The destroyed pig can then be easily retrieved from its location in a pipe, as detected via radio signals, without the need for costly excavation of large sections of the pipe.
