The present disclosure provides a unique digitally integrated, self-trained pre-distortion curve generation method and apparatus for semiconductor lasers (SCLs) to generate linearly swept optical signals that are applicable to a wide range of sweep velocities and semiconductor laser types. The method requires no prior knowledge of the frequency response of the laser and is highly accurate.

An optical amplification device includes: a semiconductor optical amplifier; a first detector that detects an input optical power of the semiconductor optical amplifier; a second detector that detects an output optical power of the semiconductor optical amplifier; and a controller that controls a driving current of the semiconductor optical amplifier, wherein the controller supplies a predetermined driving current to the semiconductor optical amplifier when an optical signal is not input to the semiconductor optical amplifier, the second detector detects an optical power of Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) output from the semiconductor optical amplifier when the predetermined driving current is supplied to the semiconductor optical amplifier, and the controller controls the driving current of the semiconductor optical amplifier based on the input optical power of the semiconductor optical amplifier detected by the first detector, and the optical power of the ASE.

A constant current control power supply of an embodiment of the present invention includes a switching regulator that includes a switching circuit having a switching device and a rectifier device, a smoothing circuit having reactors and capacitors, a current detection circuit, and a control circuit, for outputting a constant current in accordance with a command value from a controller. When ON indicates a case where the command value commands an output of a higher current than a predetermined value and OFF indicates a case where the command value commands an output of a lower current than the predetermined value, on condition that a pulse operation alternating between the ON and the OFF is inputted, the control circuit amplifies a variation in the command value by a predetermined amplification factor and adds the amplified variation to the command value, and attenuates the added variation with a predetermined time constant.

Microwave-frequency signal generation by generating multiple sideband optical signals separated by phase-modulation frequency fM, generating beat signals between one or two sidebands and one or two optical reference signals, generating a loop-filtered error signal by comparing an electrical reference signal to one of the beat signals or their difference, and controlling with the error signal in a phase-locked loop arrangement a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that drives the sideband generation at the frequency fM. A portion of the VCO output is the generated microwave-frequency signal.

The invention provides a system and a method for wavelength referencing and polarization mitigation. An optical wavelength tunable laser source is swept in a number of contiguous, overlapping sweep segments. A coarse reference wavelength section produces a reference signal that defines at least one absolute wavelength within a sweep segment. A fine wavelength reference section produces a periodic wavelength reference signal that defines a plurality of equidistant wavelengths within each sweep segment with an indeterminate offset relative to the absolute wavelength(s) of the coarse reference wavelength section. The free spectral range of the fine wavelength reference section is smaller than the spacing between subsequent absolute reference wavelengths of the coarse reference wavelength section. This arrangement allows reducing the minimum required overlap between contiguous sweep segments.

Unidirectionality of lasers is enhanced by forming one or more etched gaps (78, 80) in the laser cavity. The gaps may be provided in any segment of a laser, such as any leg of a ring laser, or in one leg (62) of a V-shaped laser (60). A Brewster angle facet at the distal end of a photonic device coupled to the laser reduces back-reflection into the laser cavity. A distributed Bragg reflector is used at the output of a laser to enhance the side-mode suppression ratio of the laser.
