Internal arcing in a cathode ray tube is substantially prevented by coating a portion of the interior of the funnel and neck of the tube with an electrically conductive composition, and coating a portion of the interior of the funnel and neck of the tube with an electrically resistive composition. The electrically conductive composition comprises about 10-30 weight percent iron and about 90-70 weight percent of a glass frit. The electrically resistive composition comprises about 8-24 weight percent iron, about 2-8 weight percent TiO.sub.2 and about 90-68 weight percent glass frit. The use of conventional "dag" coatings is eliminated. The cathode ray tube is especially useful as a picture tube in a color television receiver in which high operating voltages are employed.

A method for increasing the dielectric properties of a PbO-containing sealing glass paste and the devitrified seal made therefrom, which seals the face plate to the funnel of a color television tube, to a value greater than that provided by the solder glass, per se, by incorporating in the solder glass and the solder glass paste made therefrom a small but sufficient amount of Pb.sub.3 O.sub.4 or BaO.sub.2 to accomplish this purpose. A vehicle for a glass frit comprises hydroxypropyl cellulose as a binder and a solvent for said binder.

C.) and below its softening point (sodalime about 725.degree. C.; borosilicate about 800.degree. C.) to an atmosphere containing prescribed metalorganic compounds. A chemical reaction occurs producing a chemically modified ceramic coating which is in compression relative to the substrate thus conferring increased strength to the glass article.
