Abstract: A fire or overheat detection device includes a diaphragm adjacent to a chamber with a gas inside the chamber, wherein the diaphragm contacts the gas. The fire or overheat detection system also includes a Fabry-Perot interferometer. At least a portion of the Fabry-Perot interferometer is coupled to the diaphragm via a linkage. A light source is configured to direct an input light into the Fabry-Perot interferometer.

Abstract: A fire extinguisher includes a source conduit, a flow control device connected to the source conduit, and a supply conduit. The supply conduit is connected to the flow control device, is fluidly coupled therethrough to the source conduit, and is thermally coupled to the source conduit to communicate heat between pressurized fire suppression agent entering the flow control device through the source conduit and expanded fire suppression agent issuing from the flow control device through the supply conduit. Fire suppression systems and methods of controlling flow of fire suppressant agents are also described.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for evaluating inerting concentration of a fire suppression agent. The method includes flowing air upward into a chimney tube and flowing fuel into the flowing air in the chimney tube. A targeted concentration of the fire suppression agent is introduced into the flowing air and into the flowing fuel in the chimney tube. An ignitor is ignited to provide ignition energy to the flowing air and the flowing fuel, and the ignitor is deactivated. The targeted concentration of the fire suppression agent is at or above the inerting concentration of the fire suppression agent if combustion of the flowing fuel does not persist beyond three seconds after the ignitor is deactivated.

Abstract: A system for detecting gas leakage within a battery pack includes a battery pack, a controller, and a detector. The battery pack comprises a plurality of cells which may be subject to a gas leakage. The detector is configured to sense a concentration value of one or more gases. The detector is further configured to generate a return signal indicative of no alarm, a first alarm level, or a second alarm level. The detector is electrically connected to the controller and is configured to transmit the return signal to the controller. The controller is configured to output a first alarm level or a second alarm level in response to the return signal. Emergency response procedures may be implemented based on the level of gas leakage within the battery pack indicated.

Abstract: A fire suppressant for cooling a battery cell in a battery pack includes a pressurized mixture of an organic compound and carbon dioxide. The organic compound is 1,1,1,2,2,4,4,5,5,5-nonafluoro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-3-pentanone. A ratio of a mass of the organic compound to a mass of the carbon dioxide is between 1:4 and 4:1. The mixture is pressurized above a vapor pressure of the carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide, when depressurized, evaporates and cools the organic compound and the battery cell. The mixture, when depressurized, flows through the battery cell. An amount of the fire suppressant flowed through the battery pack is equal to or greater than an inerting volume of fire suppressant for the battery pack.

Abstract: A fire suppression system includes a feed port and a channel to couple the feed port to an actuation chamber. A solenoid valve controllably blocks a connection between the feed port and the channel. Pressure from the feed port builds up in the actuation chamber based on the solenoid valve unblocking the connection. A piston is in communication with the actuation chamber. The system also includes an inlet port closed off by a disc. The piston travels through the inlet port and burst the disc based on the pressure in the actuation chamber. An outlet port is coupled to the inlet port.

Abstract: A battery system of an aircraft includes one or more battery packages. Each battery package includes a plurality of battery cells. A thermal management system is fluidly connected to the one or more battery packages. The cooling system has a flow of coolant flowing therethrough. Thermal energy is dissipated from the one or more battery packages via a phase change of the flow of coolant. A method of managing thermal energy of a battery package includes conducting thermal energy from a plurality of battery cells via a conductive inter-cell separator located between adjacent battery cells, and transferring the thermal energy from the inter-cell separator to a flow of coolant in thermal communication with the conductive inter-cell separator, thereby causing a phase change in the flow of coolant resulting in cooling of the plurality of battery cells. The thermal energy is then dissipated from the flow of coolant.

Abstract: A system for detecting a fire or overheating event includes a heat detector, an optical fiber, a photodetector, and a processing unit. The pneumatic heat detector includes a sealed chamber sealed with a diaphragm having an initial position, and the optical fiber is in operable communication with the diaphragm. The optical fiber includes a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG). The optical signal generator is configured to emit an optical signal with into the optical fiber. The photodetector is configured to receive a reflected optical signal from the FBG. The processing unit is configured to correlate the reflection wavelength of the reflected optical signal with a temperature of the heat detector.
