A heat exchanger includes a pair of tank units with parallel tube and air centers connected therebetween. The tank units are comprised of a separate tank member and header. The header includes apertures for receiving the tubes, and side cavities. The cavities extend the length of the tank unit and include a base with apertures spaced therein and a side wall with receptacles formed therein. The tank member includes flanges to be received within the cavities. The flanges include a projection for mating with the receptacle and a snap tab received within the aperture to provide a snap-on connection between the tank member and the header. An adhesive is provided within the base to seal, reinforce and prevent corrosion in the tank and header joint.

A detachable clip is disclosed separately fixturing each of two reinforcements extending along opposite sides of a heat exchanger core to one of two headers at opposite ends of the core during brazing of the core and the reinforcements to the headers at junctures thereof and wherein the reinforcements may be assembled prior to brazing with substantial air space at their junctures with the headers but not exceeding a prescribed limit. The clip is made of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion substantially less than the reinforcements so as to draw the reinforcements and headers together during brazing through a distance at least equal to the prescribed air space limit to thereby assure contact at all the junctures between the reinforcements and headers during the brazing thereof.

A heat exchanger includes a pair of manifolds each extending between manifold ends and defining a plurality of slits disposed in a plurality of parallel slit rows and each slit having a center axis. The center axes of the slits in each of the slit rows are aligned in a row plane. Reinforcement members extend between reinforcement ends each of which have at least one tab for connection thereof to one of the manifold ends. Each of the manifolds has at least one retainer for clamping one of the reinforcement members thereto. Each of the tabs include at least one connector extending toward the adjacent manifold end. One of the connectors is centered on each of the row planes to define row isolating openings between adjacent connectors to isolate each of the row planes from differential forces of adjacent row planes.

The invention is a method for producing a heat exchanger assembly including the steps of extruding a plastic and an adhesive from a co-extrusion die into a plurality of tubes spaced from each other with each tube having an adhesive disposed on its exterior surface. A plurality of corrugated air fins are serially fed into the co-extrusion die and spaced from each other by a predetermined space and ejected between adjacent tubes with the corrugations extending transversely between the tubes. The adhesive is then cured to secure the tubes to the air fins. The method proceeds by cutting the tubes at each predetermined space with a guillotine shear to produce a plurality of unified heat exchanger cores. The ends of the tubes of each core are inserted into tube slots in manifolds, and the tubes and manifolds are adhesively secured together to define a heat exchanger assembly.

The fabrication of a heat exchanger assembly by disposing a metal fitting of an oil cooler subassembly into an opening in a first tank and disposing a tubular connector into a bore in the fitting. These components are mechanically held together prior to brazing by disposing an outer clinch cylinder to extend from the fitting though the opening and by disposing an inner clinch cylinder to extend from the fitting to above an annular rib on the tubular connector and placing V-shaped first stakes in the inner clinch cylinder for mechanical engagement with the rib and placing V-shaped second stakes in the outer clinch cylinder for mechanical engagement with the first tank.
