摘要:
A thermal barrier for a nuclear reactor coolant pump includes a stack of pancake cooling coils encircling the pump shaft where it enters the pump chamber. This stack of coiling coils has an irregular peripheral surface formed by axially extending, diametrically opposed, inlet and outlet tubes which are circumferentially indexed for each pancake coil. The inner surface of a cylindrical cover has a complimentary inner peripheral surface formed by two sets of diametrically opposed cascaded steps so that the volume of the annulus between the coil stack and cover is minimized to reduce stratification of cooling water injected into the cover. A collar around the pump shaft at the opening in the end wall of the cover extends axially into the coil stack to prevent vortices produced by the spinning shaft from flowing across the end wall of the cover, while circumferentially spaced holes in the collar prevent significant alteration of the thermal conditions of the pancake coiling coils. An integral flange on the collar serves as a shim for the stack of coils. An external insulator includes a sleeve with a low coefficient of thermal expansion shrink fit over a groove in the outer surface of the cylindrical cover to form an annular chamber which is divided by a number of nested cans into a plurality of concentric sections each containing stagnant reactor coolant.

An auxiliary thruster for a marine vessel. The auxiliary thruster includes a submersible propulsion unit which has a shroud with a propeller rotatably mounted therein. A canned electric motor is mounted between the propeller and the shroud for rotating the propeller to create thrust. A propulsion unit deploying and rotating mechanism is mounted on the hull and on the propulsion unit. The propulsion unit deploying and rotating mechanism is operable to extend the propulsion unit out of the hull and retract it into the hull and to rotate the propulsion unit to direct the thrust generated thereby in any desired direction when the thruster is in the deployed position. When the thruster is retracted, it is positioned with a tunnel extending transversely through the hull. Rotation of the propeller while in the retracted position generates laterally directed thrust through the tunnel.

Both a closed system and method for cooling a submersible propulsor unit for a water vehicle is provided for a unit of the type that includes a submersible motor having a shaft connected to a propeller, and a housing containing the motor. The system comprises a motor cooling assembly that includes a shaft seal for conducting the shaft outside of the housing while preventing ambient water from entering the housing, a liquid contained within the housing for cooling the motor, a heat exchanger for thermally connecting but mechanically isolating the liquid from the ambient water, an impeller (102) for recirculating the liquid through both the motor and the heat exchanger, and a bellows (128) for equilibrating any pressure differentials between the cooling liquid and the ambient water. A filter assembly (129) mounted within the bellows relieves any pressure differential that is not relieved by the bellows when ambient water pressure is greater than that of the cooling liquid in the housing. The filter assembly removes particulate debris from the ambient water before admitting it into the housing, to relieve the pressure differential, and may further include an osmotic membrane for preventing dissolved salts in ambient water from entering the cooling liquid.

A reactor coolant pump has an outer casing with an internal cavity holding a coolant and a rotor rotatably mounted in the cavity within the coolant. An assembly for permitting inservice inspection of the pump rotor without first draining the coolant from the casing cavity is attached to an end of the pump. A cylindrical bore is defined through the casing in axial alignment with an end of pump rotor and opening into the internal cavity. An extension attached on the rotor end and rotatable therewith has a cylindrical coupler member extending into the bore. An outer end of the coupler member has an element configured to receive a tool for performance of inservice rotor inspection. A hollow cylindrical member is disposed in the bore and surrounds the coupler member. The cylindrical member is slidably movable relative to the coupler member along the bore between a retracted position wherein the cylindrical member is stored for normal pump operation and an extended position wherein the cylindrical member is extended for permitting inservice rotor inspection. A cover member is detachably and sealably attached to the casing across the bore for closing the bore and retaining the cylindrical member at its retracted position for normal pump operation. Upon detachment of the cover member, the cylindrical member can be extended to permit inservice rotor inspection.

A pipe loop arrangement for the closed primary system of a nuclear reactor. The heated reactor coolant flows through a horizontally positioned hot leg pipe while the return flow cooled reactor coolant flows through a cold leg pipe concentrically mounted within the hot leg pipe. A bell-mounted suction port and the high pressure discharge port of the reactor coolant pump are located within an outlet chamber with the steam generator. A transition piece slip fitted to an opening within the reactor vessel outlet flange connects the cold leg pipe to the inlet to the nuclear core. A flow shroud surrounding the pump discharge connects the pump discharge to the cold leg pipe, forms a volute for the pump discharge and separates the outlet chamber from the inlet chamber of the steam generator.

Failure of the control-rod assemblies, particularly the control-rod guides and the WDRC's, by transverse flow of coolant through these members is prevented by directing the flow through a calandria above the guides. To avoid a high pressure drop in the coolant between the calandria and the outlet nozzles, the outlet nozzles are at the same level as the calandria. The calandria has hollow tubes between upper and lower supports. The length of the portion of the tubes between the supports is greater than the diameter of the outlet nozzles.

The lower end of a nuclear reactor core barrel (16) is laterally stabilized within the reactor pressure vessel (10) by four auxiliary support structures (100) equiangularly disposed about the periphery of the reactor lower hemispherical shell (12). The core barrel lower support plate (18) has keys (122) secured thereto for disposition within recesses (114) defined within crossbeams (102) of the structures (100) through which horizontal radial and tangential forces, as well as severe vertical loads, are transmitted from the core barrel (16) to the reactor vessel (10). Shock absorbers (120) interconnect the keys (122) and the crossbeams (102), and divergent brackets (104) serve to radially space the crossbeam (102) from the shell wall (12) so as to define a vertical coolant flow channel (108) through each structure (100). The divergent brackets (104) serve to distribute radial loads from the core barrel (16) to the pressure vessel (10) as radial compression forces, and to convert tangential bending moments into circumferential shear and radial compression forces. Upper inclined portions (162) of the brackets (104) serve to vertically centralize the center of load (160) of horizontal tangential forces relative to the brackets' centers of gravity (152) so as to eliminate vertical bending moments, and inclined lower portions (139) of the brackets (104) serve to convert vertical bending loads into circumferential shear and radial compression forces.

A nuclear reactor fuel assembly having an improved top nozzle subassembly with a hold-down device incorporated therewithin to prevent the force of the upward coolant flow from lifting the fuel assembly into damaging contact with the upper core support plate, while allowing for changes in fuel assembly length due to core-induced thermal expansion. The construction of the fuel assembly is such that its top surface can be placed in direct contact with the upper core plate. Thermal expansion of the components of the fuel assembly in the upward direction are accommodated within the top nozzle subassembly.

Nuclear reactor coolant pump having a tooling boom mounted on the periphery of the motor stand of the pump for transferring pump components through openings in the motor stand during performance of maintenance on the pump. The tooling boom comprises an articulated arm mounted on the periphery of the motor stand with a gripping mechanism attached to the arm at the end opposite the arm's attachment to the motor stand. The gripping mechanism is capable of having pump components firmly attached thereto so that when the articulated arm is swung in the horizontal plane, the pump components may be transferred between the inside and outside of the motor stand.

Cracks in the shaft of a reactor coolant pump adjacent a tapered end on which the impeller is mounted are removed by machining a circumferential groove in the pump shaft to a depth and an axial length which removes the cracks but does not extend into the tapered end of the pump shaft. A split ring fills the groove to an outer diameter which matches the outer diameter of the pump shaft. A thermal sleeve shrink fit over the split ring has internal annular ribs engaging the shaft and the ring to form an annulus which communicates with the pump chamber sufficiently to maintain a layer of substantially stagnant coolant over the split ring and the pump shaft at the pressure of the coolant being pumped. An oversized washer between the impeller and the impeller retainer nut overlaps the interface between the impeller and the tapered end of the pump shaft to impede the flow of hot reactor coolant along the keyways in the tapered end of the shaft and the impeller to minimize temperature fluctuations in the vicinity of the thermal sleeve. Preferably, the thermal sleeve has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than those of the shaft and the split ring.
