The piston-driven compression chamber communicates with the interrupting space via a discharge channel that is separate from the thermal blast chamber and that is closed by a discharge valve. The discharge valve is disposed between the thermal blast chamber and the piston-driven compression chamber in a manner such that the discharge valve opens to enable the gas under increased pressure in the piston-driven compression chamber to be discharged towards the interrupting space via the channel when the increase in the pressure of the gases in the thermal blast chamber is larger than the increase in the pressure of the gases in the piston-driven compression chamber.

By displacement of the block, the first and second switching contacts are moved towards each other to short circuit the closure resistance while the first and second arcing contacts are in contact with each other and the first and second permanent contacts are separate from each other.

A first end of the inertia contact is made of an alloy that is resistant to the effects of arcing. A second end of the inertia contact serves to fix the inertia contact to a first end of at least one spring. A second end of the spring is fixed to the tube. A band having a conical inside cross-section is disposed at one end of the cavity formed by the projection and the tube engages a domed collar fixed to the tube to damp the shock during relative motion of the inertia contact and the tube during contact therebetween as a result of circuit-breaker opening.
