Resinous compositions comprising an acrylic resin containing, as polymer constituting units, 20 to 55% by weight of tri-organic tin .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylate, 0.1 to 25% by weight of hydroxy bearing (meth)acrylate and the remainder of another polymerizable unsaturated monomer are provided. The compositions are useful as resinous vehicles for antifouling paints, capable of being gradually hydrolyzed in sea water, thereby resulting in a smooth coating surface and liberating an antifouling agent by themselves.

A resin dispersion type aqueous coating composition comprising a continuous phase of water medium and an aqueous resin and water insoluble resin microparticles uniformly dispersed, as a discontinuous phase, in said continuous phase, which is characterized in that said water insoluble resin is prepared by the reaction of a resin which is liquid at room temperatures and bears in its molecule functional groups capable of reacting with an epoxy or isocyanate group, and an epoxy compound or an isocyanate compound so as to give 10.about.100% reaction rate of the epoxy or isocyanate group contained in said compound. The present aqueous coating composition is excellent in its application characteristics and can give a coating with excellent gloss and smoothness.

The polyester resin is useful as resinous vehicle in self-polishing marine paint.

Preparation of hydrolyzable polyester resin comprising reacting polycarboxylic acid and polyhydric alcohol components, which is characterized by using, as at least part of said polyhydric alcohol component, a metallic salt of hydroxy carboxylic acid of the formula defined and effecting the polycondensation at a temperature which is no more than the decomposition temperature of said metallic salt. The polyester resins are useful as resinous vehicle of varnishes and antifouling paints.
