The apparatus includes an APL curve setting portion and a histogram luminance modulating portion which adjust the brightness of the backlight and a tone signal on the basis of the average brightness of the image and the brightness histogram of the image. A black extending portion applies gamma correction to the tone signal adjusted by the histogram luminance modulating portion on the basis of a previously set gamma value.
