The operator defines a blank shape and a part shape (steps S1, S2), and selects a primary machining operation or a secondary machining operation (step S3). A cutting region for the primary machining operation is defined in the same manner as with an ordinary two-axis lathe. For the secondary machining operation, the blank and part shapes are displayed in reverse (step S6), and a cutting region for the secondary machining operation is defined in the same manner as the cutting region for the primary machining operation is defined (step S7). Based on the necessary data and machining conditions that are defined, the interactive numerical control apparatus outputs numerical control data separately for the respective primary and secondary machining operations (step S8).

When a predetermined parameter item has been selected, the details of the selected item can be correctly understood, even by a person who is not skilled in NC programming language, thanks to a display of auxiliary graphics corresponding to the selected item. This enables an operator to input machining data while referring to auxiliary graphics corresponding to the parameter items, as a result of which the operator can rapidly become skilled at determining inputs.

In the USB storage device, the storage area is divided into an area in which execution of reading, writing and deleting is allowed and an area in which only execution of reading is allowed. Information to make a USB mass storage class driver recognize these areas as areas corresponding, respectively, to logical unit numbers defined in the SCSI command set of the USB mass storage class driver owned by the host is stored in the USB storage device. The information includes logical unit numbers, formats, writing/deleting allowed/not allowed flag, logical block numbers and physical block numbers. By this, the USB mass storage class driver recognizes the USB storage device as a SCSI device having two logical units.

A maker PC generates option setting data for setting bit information to one or zero, based on a name or a number of a software option to be set, in order to make the function of the software option valid or invalid. This data is encoded or encrypted by using a unique identification number of a control device. The control device reads and decodes the encoded software option setting data, in order to set data of the corresponding memory address and bit number in the control device to one or zero. By using the unique identification number of the control device, only the control device, the software option setting data of which is required, can decode the encoded data.

On a plotting image sections of the tool locus determined in accordance with the machining program appear with a workpiece configuration and a tool, the sections being correspondingly plotted in blue when the detected current value is within the first region, in green with the second region, in yellow with the third region, and in red with the fourth region.

A numerical control apparatus having a work simulation function for enabling both the workpiece and the movement of the tool to be displayed at any time on the same display screen during the work simulation. This is achieved by a variable display magnifications so that both the workpiece configuration change and the tool shift movement can always be checked adequately. The numerical control apparatus comprises a numerical control processor and an auto-programming processor. The numerical control processor determines a predetermined scale by which the workpiece can be fully displayed on a display screen of the display apparatus, calculates a scale by which both the workpiece and the tool can be displayed on the same display screen on the basis of the present tool position every time the numerical control program is executed by block for the work simulation, and further judges whether or not the scale change is necessary depending on the result of comparison between the predetermined scale and the calculated scale and also the scale used for the display relating to the previous program block so that change the scale can be changed when necessary. The auto-programming processor carries out the work simulation by selecting a display magnification corresponding to the determined scale.
