    Abstract: A novel multipart punch and system allows apertures to be formed in hydroformed members with the slug which would otherwise result being divided into two or more smaller slugs. These smaller slugs can be folded back into the hydroformed member and held captive therein or removed if desired. The multipart punch and system provides a flush surface in the hydroforming mold when the punch is in its initial position to allow easy loading and unloading of the mold and to allow additional blank to be fed into the mold during the hydroforming operation, if desired. Also, the hydraulic ram used with the multipart punch need develop less force than an equivalent prior art stepped punch.

    Abstract: In one aspect, the invention is directed to a half-cradle for use in a vehicle frame. The half-cradle includes a cast end member formed from a first material and first and second tubular cross-member stubs extending from the cast end member. The first and second tubular cross-member stubs are made from a second material. Each of the stubs has an end buried in the cast end member, wherein the buried end is uncapped.     Abstract: A bi-metallic component including a tubular stud member extending from an open first end to an open second end, and a cast member cast around the open second end of the tubular stud member is provided. The cast member is formed from first material, such as an aluminum alloy; and the tubular stud member is formed from a second material, such as steel.     Abstract: A method of forming a shaped product from an initial blank comprises subjecting the initial blank to a hot forming and press hardening operation to form the shaped product with substantially a uniform first tensile strength. Subsequently, the shaped product is at least partially immersed into a fluidized bed that is maintained within a known range of operating temperatures. While the shaped product is immersed into the fluidized bed, a first region of the shaped product is heated selectively to above a known temperature. The first region is then cooled, such that the first region attains a second tensile strength that is substantially less than the first tensile strength.
