Abstract: A grass guard for forming a vegetationless border around a perimeter of an object, such as a lawn sprinkler head, is described. One particular embodiment consists of a two layer construction. The top layer is a plastic sheet simulating grass. The bottom layer is made of a heavy grit bonded into a uniform body with a polymer. The layers form a relatively thin, weather resistant, plastically compliant disk with a center hole for stretch, self-adjusting fit over a pre-installed sprinkler head. The device is also easily cut through with a knife to fit various head locations. The bottom layer has an outside vertical edge with a top rounded corner enclosing the top layer to prevent edge delamination or fraying. An adhesive is provided to bond the grass guard to the neck of the sprinkler head to eliminate gap formation around the head. A hammering board can be used to facilitate the installation. Optionally, pre-watering the vicinity of the sprinkler head until the ground is softened from moisture further simplifies the installation and enhances the quality. In general, the device can be used to guard against the growth of vegetation next to any physical objects with the proper tailoring of geometry and choice of associated manufacturing process.

Abstract: Effective and environmentally benign liquid deicing and anti-icing compositions are provided by aqueous solutions of (a) alkali metal acetates, preferably KAc, (b) phosphate ion, e.g., H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 or K.sub.3 PO.sub.4, (c) soluble silicate,, e.g., K.sub.2 SiO.sub.3 or Na.sub.2 SiO.sub.3, (d) aromatic triazole, preferably tolyltriazole, (e) a dye which provides a visible hue, and (f) a compatible surfactant which lowers the surface tension to below about 50 dynes per sq. cm., prevents aggregation of components (a) to (f), and assures excellent dispersion across aircraft surfaces, preferablty octylphenoxypolyethoxy ethylphosphate. These compositions are environmentally safe and are useful in methods for deicing or preventative anti-icing of aircraft that meet AEA, ISO and SAE aviation standards. These compositions remain effective at low temperatures and are non-corrosive to metals used in aircraft construction.

Abstract: A straight line linkage mechanism for a solid axle of a motor vehicle (referable to alternatively as a “Chan-Cameron mechanism” or as a “Chan-Cameron linkage mechanism”) includes a main bar, a tie rod and a shackle. The shackle is preferably configured as an “A-arm”, having its legs pivotally connected to a solid axle. The apex of the shackle is pivotally connected to a first end of the main bar. The opposite second end of the main bar is pivotally connected to the frame. The tie rod is pivotally connected at one end to a mid-range location of the axle and, at its opposite end, pivotally to a mid-point location of the main bar. The connection locations of the main bar are spaced apart twice as far as the connection locations of the tie rod. In operation, as the axle moves vertically relative to the frame in response to the wheels encountering irregular terrain, the first end of the main bar will tend to move horizontally. The shackle is mounted to the axle so that the apex thereof is horizontally movable. Accordingly, the axle is able to move vertically relative to the frame without a vertical arc component.

Abstract: A body leveling system for a motor vehicle including a rigid axle housing, a pair of dirigible wheels on the rigid axle housing, and a pair of air springs between the body and the rigid axle housing. During a turn, links between the body and the rigid axle housing effect roll understeer by turning the axle housing toward the center of the turn in response to pivotal movement of the body about its longitudinal roll axis. When the load on the vehicle body is in a moderate range from empty to four average passengers, the air springs are selectively inflated and deflated to maintain the body at curb trim. When the load on the body exceeds the moderate range in either a high range or an overload range, the air springs are sealed closed and incrementally vertically deflect as the load increases. The GVW trim of the vehicle body is below its curb trim and its center of gravity is lower at GVW than at curb trim for improved dynamic performance at GVW. In the overload range, an “overload trim” of the vehicle body is below its GVW trim to afford a visual alert of loading beyond GVW.
