Abstract:
In a fuel-pumping system in an internal combustion engine, a mechanical fuel pump roller actuator is slidably disposed to ride on a dedicated tri-lobate camshaft lobe. In prior art camshaft lobes for this purpose, a portion of the lift profile over a certain angle of camshaft rotation imparts a constant velocity, and hence zero acceleration and zero jerk, to the roller actuator. It has been found that such areas of zero acceleration give rise to undesirably high contact stress between the lobe and the roller actuator. In a method in accordance with the present invention, a reference radius of curvature of a reference camshaft lobe lift profile is adjusted such that, between regions of minimum lift and maximum lift, there are no regions imparting zero acceleration to the actuator and maximum contact stress is reduced.
Abstract:
Compact valve lifters are disclosed for overhead camshaft engines with direct acting valve gear and for engines with indirect acting valve actuation such as push rod actuated overhead valves. Two step variable lift and non-variable lift valve lifters are included as are roller and non-roller follower types with various features in common.
Abstract:
A camshaft has, for each valve lifter, a high lift cam between two low lift cams, the high lift cam fitting within the envelope of the low lift cams. The lifter comprises an outer tappet elongated in the direction of the camshaft and slidably mounted in an elongated bore in a cam carrier. The outer tappet is contacted by both low lift cams and operates two valves simultaneously. An elongated bore extending transverse of the outer tappet carries an elongated inner tappet which is contacted by the high lift cam. A hydraulically actuated locking mechanism couples the tappets for movement together for high lift operation and unlocks for low lift operation to allow the inner tappet to idle in the outer tappet.
Abstract:
A direct acting hydraulic valve lifter of the type that is reciprocably journaled as in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine so as to be engaged by a cam on an engine driven camshaft to control opening and closing movement of an associate valve. The lifter includes a follower body having a circular outer tubular wall with an inner integral web closely adjacent to one end thereof that terminates at a stepped bored integral depending piston, the one end thereof being closed by a disk cam engaging foot which forms with the piston and a surface of the web a fluid reservoir. A baffle, fixed to the plunger and to inner surface of the tubular wall, defines an oil supply passage which is adapted to receive fluid via a side port in the tubular wall and to be in flow communication with the fluid reservoir via an aperture in the web. A cup-shaped, closed end cylinder member slidably encircles the plunger to form therewith a hydraulic lash adjuster having a pressure chamber therein. In one enbodiment, a mechanical retainer is operatively secured to the tubular wall whereby to retain the cylinder member in unit assembly on the plunger. In a preferred embodiment, lubricating oil in the pressure chamber and in a leak-down flow path between the cylinder member and plunger and a one-way ball valve controlling flow into the pressure chamber are operative to hold the cylinder member in unit assembly on the plunger.
Abstract:
A two-step roller finger follower assembly for use in conjunction with a camshaft of an internal combustion engine, wherein the camshaft has at least one first lobe and at least one second lobe. The roller finger follower assembly comprises a follower body for engaging the first cam lobe and having a central aperture, a follower pivotably disposed on the follower body in the central aperture for engaging the second cam lobe, and a limiting stop disposed on the follower body for engaging a feature on the follower to limit travel of the follower body with respect to the follower. The limiting stop prevents overtravel of the follower body during valve-deactivation mode of the assembly, thus preventing excessive leak down of an associated hydraulic lash adjuster.
Abstract:
A hydraulic lash adjuster includes a leak down land and a support land that are substantially cylindrical. The support land is substantially coaxial relative to the leak down land, and at least a portion of the support land is disposed radially opposite the leak down land.

Abstract:
An improved lifter-oil manifold assembly (LOMA) for variable actuation of combustion valves in an internal combustion engine, comprising a body formed preferably of first and second plates having portions of oil flow passages integrally molded therein. A plurality of individual solenoid-actuated oil control valves is retained by a retainer in sockets formed in the plates. An integral electrical leadframe provides circuitry for energizing the solenoids. A DIFP is mounted to the LOMA and an RHPL engages the DIFP. Preferably, the RHPL and DIFP are lubricated by an oil orifice in the LOMA, and preferably the DIFP and RHPL are disposed in a central symmetry plane of the engine.

Abstract:
A fuel pump actuator comprising a body portion and a contact end fitted to the body portion for actuating a mechanical fuel pump in response to a camshaft lobe. A roller mounted to the body portion is configured to ride on the lobe. The contact end of the actuator engages a plunger of the fuel pump. The body portion of the actuator is preferably a body portion of a conventional hydraulic valve lifter and preferably includes a lash adjuster and is reciprocally disposed in a bore on the engine block. Lubrication of the reciprocating actuator is also similar to the lubrication provided to conventional valve lifters and lash adjusters. The contact end of the actuator is configured to reduce the mass of the actuator. Several styles of the contact end and ways of attaching the contact end to the body portion are provided.
