    摘要: The invention provides substantially pure glyoxal hemiacetals of the formula

    wherein each R in an alkyl radical of 4 to about 36 carbon atoms or together are an Alpha , omega -alkylene radical of 4 to about 36 carbon atoms. They are prepared by reacting the corresponding alkanol or Alpha , omega -alkylene glycol with an aqueous solution of glyoxal of about 2 to 80% concentration by weight; the glyoxal solution may be the impure crude oxidation product of ethylene or acetaldehyde with aqueous nitric acid. The hemiacetal separates from the aqueous solution in which it was prepared and may be reconverted to glyoxal, by heating in the presence or absence of water, the glyoxal having thereby been purified.

    摘要: Citraconic acid anhydride is recovered from an aqueous solution containing citraconic and maleic acids by first isomerizing the maleic acid and removing the resulting solid fumaric acid. The filtrate is vacuum distilled to remove 80 - 90 percent of the water at a sump temperature of less than 80*C. The concentrated solution is then further vacuum distilled at a sump temperature greater than 80*C, preferably greater than 100*C, and an anhydride/water mixture is recovered overhead from which the anhydride product is separated.
