The present invention relates to a layered catalyst composite of the type generally referred to as a three-way conversion catalyst having the capability of substantially simultaneously catalyzing the oxidation of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide and the reduction of nitrogen oxides. The structure of the layered catalyst composite of the present invention is designed wherein there is a first layer and a second layer. The first layer comprises a first support; at least one first palladium component and an oxygen storage component in intimate contact with the palladium component; optionally another first platinum group metal component; a zirconium component; at least one first alkaline earth metal components and at least one first rare earth metal component selected from the group consisting of lanthanum metal components and neodymium metal components. The second layer comprises a second support; at least one second palladium component; optionally another second platinum group metal component; at least one second alkaline earth metal component; at least one second rare earth component selected from the group consisting of lanthanum metal components and neodymium metal components and a zirconium component.

The stream is contacted with an upstream catalytic composition having a cerium component and/or a zeolite component to reduce the quantity and amount of the particulate matter in the exhaust stream. The stream passes from the upstream catalytic composition to a particulate filter located downstream from the upstream catalytic composition.

A catalyst composition includes a catalytic material containing a platinum catalytic component dispersed on a bulk ceria and a palladium catalytic component; the palladium catalytic component may be dispersed either on the ceria or on another support, such as an activated alumina support. The catalytic material, which may include a refractory binder, such as alumina, may be dispersed as a washcoat on a suitable carrier, e.g., a cordierite honeycomb-type carrier having a plurality of fine gas flow passages extending therethrough. The bulk ceria may be stabilized with a zirconia stabilizer and/or a lanthana stabilizer. The catalyst composition has utility as an oxidation catalyst and as a three-way conversion catalyst. In the latter case, its activity for the reduction of nitrogen oxides may optionally be supplemented either by adding a rhodium-containing catalytic overcoat or by providing a catalyst assembly in which the above-described catalyst composition is placed in series with any suitable nitrogen oxides reduction catalyst.

The invention provides a catalyzed soot filter formed on a wall flow substrate having internal walls coated with catalyst compositions. The soot filter maintains a homogeneous flow of the exhaust gases through the internal walls of the substrate along the length of the filter due to the coating design. Both the efficiency and the durability of the catalytic function are increased over conventionally designed catalyzed soot filters. The catalyzed soot filter provides an integrated function for simultaneously treating the gaseous components of the exhaust (e.g., CO and HC) and the particulate matter deposited in the filter.
