Abstract: An electric power steering system includes an electric motor configured to provide power to a steering mechanism of a vehicle. A controller operates the electric motor in response to an input. A flash memory device is in communication with the controller. A temperature sensor provides an output indicative of a temperature of a part of the electric power steering system. The controller is configured to power down or prevent power up of the flash memory device if the temperature of the electric power steering system is outside of a predetermined temperature range. A method of operating an electric power steering system includes measuring a temperature of the electric power assisted steering system and switching off a flash memory device of the electric power steering system if the temperature of the electric power steering system is outside of a predetermined temperature range.

Abstract: A steering control system for a vehicle comprising a steering input member controlled by a driver of the vehicle comprises a steering sensor for generating an electrical signal as a function of the position of the input member. The steering control system further comprises a steering actuator which operates on the steered wheels of the vehicle as a function of the electrical signal generated by the steering sensor. A steering controller receives the electrical signal generated by the steering sensor and provides a current to the steering actuator in order to operate on the steered wheels. An accumulation counter is operatively connected with the steering controller and is configured to calculate and record the accumulated workload of the steering controller by accumulating instantaneous workloads throughout operation thereof.

Abstract: A steering assembly for a steer-by-wire vehicle comprises a rotatably mounted steering column configured for attachment of a steering member at one end, the steering column being rotatable about its longitudinal axis. The steering assembly further comprises a damper having a housing defining a volume for receipt of damping fluid; a rotor within the housing, the rotor being coupled with the steering column and rotatable therewith; a stator mounted within the housing, the stator being moveable within the housing within a defined range of movement; and a biasing arrangement acting on the stator. Each of the stator and rotor comprises a shear surface, the shear surfaces of the stator and the rotor being positioned adjacent one another to generate a resistance to rotation of the rotor when the housing contains damping fluid. Furthermore, the total surface area of the shear surfaces of the stator and the rotor positioned adjacent one another which generates the resistance to rotation of the rotor varies as the steering column is rotated from the straight ahead position by virtue of displacement of the stator relative to the rotor.

Abstract: A steering column assembly for a vehicle comprises an elongate steering column mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis and configured for attachment of a steering wheel at one end. The control arrangement comprises a substantially planar circuit board carrying one or more electrical and/or electronic components, the plane of the circuit board being inclined to the longitudinal axis of the steering column.

Abstract: A magnetic encoder includes one or more sensors and an encoder element having at least two tracks of encoder regions. Each region comprises a magnetic pole. Each sensor has one or more sensing elements associated with a respective track and generates an output that is indicative of the magnetic field associated with that track. At least one track has a differing number of poles to at least one of the other tracks. The properties of the poles of a first one of the tracks differ along the track such that there is a periodic variation along the first track of the magnetic field emitted by the first track that is detected by the sensing elements associated with the first track which at least partially cancels out a corresponding periodic variation in field from the other tracks that is also detected by the sensing elements associated with the first track.
