Abstract: An abrasive article is provided that has a backing having opposed first and second major surfaces, an abrasive layer disposed on the first major surface, and a plurality of protrusions extending outwardly from the second major surface. The protrusions comprise a polymer having a Shore A hardness ranging from 5 to 90. These articles provide an alternative sanding solution enabling abrasive articles lacking an attachment layer to be handled effectively and efficiently, providing for a technically superior abrasive sheet on the marketplace that does not use or require an attachment layer.

Abstract: A flexible abrasive article includes a unitary backing having first and second opposed major surfaces and comprising a polyurethane. In some embodiments, the backing has an average thickness of from 4 to 6 mils (102 to 152 microns), a tensile strength of 500 to 3200 psi (3.45 to 22.1 MPa), and an ultimate elongation of 230 to 530 percent. In some embodiments, the flexible abrasive article has a tensile strength of 400 to 2400 psi (2.8 to 16.5 MPa), and a ultimate elongation of 180 to 380 percent. An abrasive layer is disposed on and secured to the unitary backing.

Abstract: Provided are abrasive articles that include a plurality of layers, in the following order: a backing; an abrasive layer; and a supersize coat. The supersize coat contains a metal salt of a long-chain fatty acid and clay particles dispersed therein. Advantageously, the clay particles enhance the optical clarity of the supersize coat, allowing printed abrasive articles to be made with thicker supersize coatings. The addition of clay was also found to improve cut performance of the abrasive article relative to articles in which the clay particles are absent.

Abstract: An abrasive article is provided which comprises a plurality of layers in the following order: a backing; an abrasive layer; a primer layer comprising clay particles, wherein the clay particles are agglomerated and form a layer; and a supersize coat comprising a metal salt of a long-chain fatty acid. The addition of the aforementioned primer layer can significantly reduce loading of swarf and improve both the cut and expected lifetime of the abrasive article.

The roll coating system (100) includes a coating roll (110) having a deformable inner layer (12) with a surface thereof covered by a deformable outer layer (14), the inner layer being softer than the outer layer. A substrate (3) is conveyed to the nip (12) between the coating roll and a back-up roll (120). A metered coating material is transferred from the coating roll to a patterned surface structure (40) of the substrate at the nip to form a conformal coating on the patterned structure of the substrate.

Abstract: Abrasive articles, along with related compositions and methods, are provided. A first aspect relates to an abrasive article comprising a backing and an abrasive layer disposed on a major surface of the backing. The abrasive layer comprises a particulate mixture comprising formed abrasive particles and diluent abrasive particles. Based on the overall weight of the particulate mixture, about 0 wt. % to less than 10 wt. % formed abrasive particles having a substantially monodisperse particle size of from about 80 micrometers to about 120 micrometers; and about greater than 90 wt. % to about 99 wt. % diluent abrasive particles having a median particle size of from about 50 micrometers to about 250 micrometers.

An ink layer is disposed on the first major surface of the first base layer, while a second, thermoplastic base layer is disposed on the ink layer whereby the ink layer is located between the first and second base layers. Disposed on the second base layer is an abrasive layer such that the second base layer is located between the abrasive layer and the ink layer. Compared with conventional printed flexible adhesive articles, the provided articles improved robustness while avoiding manufacturing difficulties related to flexographic printing onto abrasive coated articles.
