Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for producing appliances for expansion of the arch of a patient are provided. An arch expanding appliance comprises a force generating portion to apply an arch expansion force and a retention portion to hold the force generating portion on the teeth. The retention portion comprises a flexible portion and a stiff portion. The force generating portion applies a force to move teeth associated with the flexible portion, while the stiff portion resists movement of its associated teeth. The orthodontic appliances can be designed according to the specifications provided herein and manufactured using direct fabrication methods.

Abstract: Methods of orthodontic treatment using localized energy. The methods may include determining that one or more of a patient's teeth are off track from a treatment plan based on one or more discrepancies between a current virtual model and a target virtual model. The current virtual model may be based on image(s) taken of the patient's teeth during a stage of orthodontic treatment. The methods may also include modifying the treatment plan by implementing local energy radiation to a region of the patient's dental arch. The local energy radiation may be configured to accelerate repositioning of the one or more of the patient's teeth and to put the one or more of the patient's teeth on track according to the treatment plan.

Abstract: Orthodontic treatment monitoring using intermediate devices. In one example, an orthodontic appliance case includes a near field communication (NFC) circuitry including a first antenna that is configured to receive data transmitted from a sensor module on an orthodontic appliance when the sensor module is within the orthodontic appliance case. The data may include information regarding when the orthodontic appliance was worn in a patient's mouth. The orthodontic appliance case may also include a data store configured to store the data, and a Bluetooth communication circuitry including a second antenna configured to transmit the data to an external computing device when the external computing device is within communication range of the second antenna.

These palatal expanders may be configured to have a variable surface smoothness on one side (e.g., the lingual-facing surface) compared to the opposite side (e.g., the palatal-facing surface). These palatal expanders may be configured to have a varying thickness in the palatal region. These palatal expanders may be adapted for ease in removal by the patient or caregiver (e.g., including a hinged region and/or detachment region, and/or including a thinner buccal side then occlusal side, etc.).
