A hierarchical link scheduling system and method is provided. A central controller gathers network information, including global parameters and long term demands, and determines an initial schedule for link activation based on these variables. A scheduler receives the initial schedule and modifies the initial schedule based on local parameters, inter-schedule negotiation, or other short term or localized requests. The scheduler activates the links according to the modified schedule. Accordingly, the scheduler can be responsible for modifying the initial schedule provided by central controller with localized or short term requests or demands, and providing the necessary parameters to enable link activation between nodes according to the modified schedule.

There is disclosed a system for transmitting data to users. The system includes nodes interconnected by at least one data network. The nodes are organized hierarchically to comprise a root node and at least two child nodes. The data transmission characteristics of communication with each of the child nodes are different. The root node is configured to: receive data transmission preferences of a particular user; receive data to be transmitted to the particular user; and transmit a selected subset of the data to at least one of the child nodes. The subset selected based on at least the received data transmission preferences and the data transmission characteristics, to permit the particular user to obtain data from the child nodes according to the data transmission preferences. The at least one of the child nodes being configured to: receive data from the root node; and transmit at least part of the received data to the user.

The indication of buffer status can be generated by a third-party device which is external to both the communication device and the scheduler. In some embodiments matched local and remote models of the buffer are maintained at the communication device and third-party device (or scheduler), respectively. The communication device monitors locally for drift of the model from the actual buffer status. When a level of mismatch in the model is detected, both the local and remote models are updated to mitigate the mismatch.

The method includes receiving a service request from said user device at an Access Point and selecting a network function Authentication and Authorization (AA) function (AAF) to confirm the user device is authorized for the requested service, and transmitting the request to the selected network function AAA function. The AAAF which processes the request may reside with the virtual network operator (VNO). However, the VNO may share its AAA database with other network entities (for example, Telecom Connectivity Service Providers (TCSPs) or InPs), and allow those entities to perform the AAA functions.

A traffic engineering element (TEE) is disclosed which receives a request from at least one wireless device for uplink data transmission. The TEE then determines the backhaul conditions of the backhaul network and coordinates uplink data transmissions from at least one wireless device to one or more receivers dependent on the determined backhaul conditions.

A method and apparatus are provided for handling uplink data traversing a backhaul in a Radio Access Network (RAN). Uplink data received at access nodes of the RAN is processed by processing functions separate from the access nodes. The processing functions provide processed data for use, by further nodes, in decoding of the information transmitted from client devices. Processing can include one or more of: regenerating uplink signals, requantizing signals, and selecting a portion of received data to forward. A scheduler which controls various access nodes and processing functions concurrently with issuance of uplink grants is also provided.
