Aspects of the present application allow for measurement of a calibrated resistance for a resistive film in a sensing element, such that effects from contact resistance and background resistance drifts due to factors such as temperature, strain or aging can be reduced or eliminated. In some embodiments, by taking a plurality of two-terminal resistance measurements between various pairs of electrodes on a resistive film, a contact-resistance-independent resistance of a reference portion of the resistive film can be determined. Further, a contact-resistance-independent resistance of a sensing portion of the resistive film can be determined based on a plurality of two-terminal resistance measurements between pairs of electrodes. The resistance of the reference portion can be removed from the measured resistance of the sensing portion, such that variations in the reference portion resistance that are not caused by a sensed environmental condition may be compensated.

A passive sensor node may be used for monitoring in a variety of situations. A reader may power the passive sensor while communicating with the passive sensor. In some scenarios, it may be necessary or desirable to provide security between the passive sensor and the reader. According to one aspect, the reader may send a first message initiating communication with the passive sensor, which may respond with a second message including encrypted data. An authorized reader may decrypt the data and respond with data encrypted based on the second message in a third message, which may be used by the device to authenticate the reader.

Aircraft sensors are described which record a condition of interest of the aircraft during flight without being powered. The sensor may include a sensing element comprising a nanostructure material which permanently changes state in connection with a permanent change in state of the aircraft, thus recording the condition of the aircraft. When the aircraft is on the ground, the recorded condition is read from the sensor using a wireless radio frequency (RF) reader, rather than communicating the recorded state during flight. In this manner, the sensor operates without interfering with the aircraft while in flight.

An analog circuit receives a modulated signal and processes in-phase signal and quadrature-phase signal in in-phase and quadrature-phase signal paths respectively. A digital signal processor performs discrete Fourier transform on each of the in-phase and quadrature-phase signals and determines statistical parameters responsive to mismatch characteristics to estimate quadrature error correction.
