摘要:
Methods and structures for mapping of logical to physical block addresses within a disk drive to provide independence of the logical block size and the physical disk block size. The independence of the logical and physical block sizes enables numerous beneficial features to improve disk drive capacity, performance and reliability. In one exemplary aspect, indirect mapping table structures and methods map an LBA to an associated IBA representing a block of the same size as the logical block. The IBA is then converted to a corresponding starting quantum unit of data identified by a QA. The QA is, in turn, converted to a disk block identified by a starting DBA and an offset within that DBA. The disk block may be of variable size and is independent of the size of the identified LBA. Numerous other features are enabled by the logical to physical mapping features hereof.

A disk which incorporates a variable-phase servo burst pattern is disclosed. The disk has servo information thereon. The servo information includes a first servo burst pattern written on a first track and a second servo burst pattern written on a second track. Both the first servo burst pattern and the second servo burst pattern have a plurality of transition pulses. The corresponding transition pulses of the first servo burst pattern and the second servo burst pattern are 180 degrees out of phase from one another. Furthermore, a method of writing servo-information which is used to position a magneto-resistive head on a centerline of a track is also disclosed. The method includes the steps of (1) writing a first servo burst pattern on a first track, the first servo burst pattern having a plurality of transition pulses; and (2) writing a second servo burst pattern on a second track, the second servo burst pattern having a plurality of transition pulses, wherein the corresponding transition pulses of the first servo burst pattern and the second servo burst pattern are 180 degrees out of phase from one another.

A disk having a servo burst pattern used for generating PES curves for MR heads is disclosed. The disk has a plurality of tracks and each of the tracks has a track width. The servo burst pattern includes a first servo burst and a second servo burst forming a first servo burst pair; and, a third servo burst and a fourth servo burst forming a second servo burst pair. The second servo burst pair is circumferentially adjacent to the first servo burst pair. The third servo burst spans a distance of (TW/2+K(TW/2)), while the fourth servo burst spans a distance of ((TW/2+(2-K)(TW/2)). In the above equations, TW equals the track width and 0

Various embodiments of the present invention are generally directed to propagating repeated runout (RRO) correction values for radially concentric servo seams on a storage medium in relation to an RRO correction value for an adjacent seam and a radial separation between the seams.

In accordance with various embodiments, a rotatable member is mounted to a spindle hub so that initial servo data previously provided to the rotatable member are eccentrically offset with respect to a rotational center of the spindle hub. Compensation vales are determined to characterize said offset, after which final servo data are provided to the rotatable member in relation to the initial servo data and the determined compensation values. The final servo data are nominally concentric with the rotational center of the spindle hub.

Dynamically detecting off-track errors in a disk drive by adjusting transducer head position control parameters in response to shock events. In an embodiment, shock events with large magnitude trigger a severe shock timer which lengthens the write fault before write operations resume. In another embodiment, a lower shock threshold is used following an initial shock event. In yet another embodiment, a lower shock threshold is used if an accumulated average position error of the transducer head is large.

Embodiments of the present invention allow for media erasure. Various embodiments allow for controlling an actuator based on feedback signal measurements and disk phase to seek a head across a surface of a disk systematically for an erasure operation. Also, in various embodiments, a substantially repeatable seek motion of a head across a stroke may be determined, and launch points at which the head is launched over a disk in the seek motion for erasing at least a portion of the disk are determined based on disk phase.

A method and apparatus for detecting a high flying condition of a transducer head in a computer disk drive is provided. The method and apparatus allow the detection of high fly write events that occur over one or a small number of data sectors. In addition, the present invention provides a method and apparatus for detecting high fly write events with a great deal of sensitivity. The method and apparatus of the present invention provide quick response and high sensitivity by monitoring the strength of a signal derived from data written to the disk, and signaling a high fly write event if the monitored signal strength in connection with a particular piece of data is less than a stored high fly write number corresponding to that piece of data by a predetermined amount.

A method and apparatus for detecting a high fly write event in a computer disk drive is provided. The method and apparatus allow the detection of high fly write events occurring over very short time spans. In addition, the present invention provides a method and apparatus for detecting high fly write events with a great deal of sensitivity. The method and apparatus of the present invention provide quick response and high sensitivity by monitoring the strength of a signal derived from a servo sector position burst or a group of bursts, and signaling a high fly write event if the monitored signal strength is less than a predetermined or threshold amount.
