The present invention is an imaged photographic element having a protective overcoat thereon. The protective overcoat is formed by providing a photographic element having at least one silver halide light-sensitive emulsion layer; and applying an aqueous coating comprising polymer particles having an average size of 0.1 to 50 microns at a weight percent of 5 to 50 percent, a soft polymer latex binder at a weight percent of 1 to 3 percent, over the at least one silver halide light-sensitive emulsion layer. The silver halide light sensitive emulsion layer is developed to provide an imaged photographic element. The hydrophobic polymer particles is fused to form a protective overcoat.

A process of forming a single color, ablation image having improved abrasion resistance comprising: a) imagewise-heating by means of a laser an ablative recording element comprising a support having thereon an image layer comprising an image dye or pigment dispersed in a polymeric binder, which causes the image layer to ablate imagewise, the image layer having a near infrared-absorbing material associated therewith to absorb at a given wavelength of the laser used to expose the element, the image dye or pigment absorbing in the region of from about 300 to about 700 nm; b) removing the ablated material to obtain an image in the ablative recording element; c) either charging the imaged, ablative recording element to a given polarity or applying a voltage across the surface of the element which is attracted to a conductive surface behind the element; d) applying colorless, charged particles to the element which causes them to be electrostatically attracted to the surface of the image layer; and e) heat-fusing the particles to obtain a protective overcoat over the entire surface of the image layer.

A photographic element is disclosed which comprises (a) a support, (b) a radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer on one side of the support, and (c) a protective backing on the opposite side of the support which provides scratch and abrasion resistance and process surviving lubricity. The protective backing is comprised of one or more layers, the outermost of which comprises a film-forming hydrophobic lubricious polyester-siloxane block copolymer and a hydrophobic co-binder which does not contain polysiloxane block units. In preferred embodiments of the invention, the backing further comprises a solid particle dye dispersion of a filter dye which is readily soluble or decolorizable in alkali aqueous photographic processing solutions at pH of 8 or above dispersed in an alkaline aqueous insoluble, organic solvent soluble film forming binder, and an electrically conductive agent, such that the backing provides halation protection during exposure as well as process-surviving antistatic protection. The present invention provides photographic elements with a backing which provides photographic process-surviving lubricity. In preferred embodiments, the backing includes a filter dye layer which provides effective antihalation protection, where the filter dyes are decolorized or removed upon processing, preferably over a protected antistatic layer. The invention employs hydrophobic, inherently lubricious, polymeric binder combinations that may be used as film-backing binders for anti-halation dyes, provide an adequate level of scratch and abrasion resistance, an appropriate level of process-surviving slip or friction, and is coatable from relatively safe organic solvents.

The present invention is a film packet which includes a photosensitive film sheet having leading and trailing ends. A light-shielding envelope removably encloses the carrier sheet and the film sheet. The envelope has first and second exterior surfaces overlying the first and second outward-facing surfaces respectively and has first and second interior surfaces facing the first and second outward surfaces respectively. The envelope includes longitudinally extending leading and trailing end portions overlying the leading and trailing end sections respectively. The leading end portion is sealed closed, and the trailing end portion is closable by cooperative engagement with the light-locking element. The leading end portion includes first and second graspable zones. The first graspable zone overlies the tab so that, when grasped, the first zone is pressed against the tab and the second graspable zone does not overlie the tab so that, when grasped, the second zone is not pressed thereagainst. The trailing end portion has a transversely disposed movement-limiting element secured to said first exterior surface thereof wherein the envelope is removable from the carrier sheet and film sheet by longitudinal relative movement therebetween in a direction separating the trailing end portion from the light-locking element.
