A crosslinkable charge transport layer material for a photoconductor includes at least one poly(arylene ether alcohol), at least one polyisocyanate crosslinking agent and at least one charge transport material dispersed in a solvent. The crosslinkable charge transport layer material is crosslinked following application of the coating solution to the photoconductor. The photoconductor including such crosslinked charge transport layer exhibits excellent wear resistance so as to have long life, thereby reducing the cost of electrophotographic printing machines employing such photoconductors therein.

A multi-layer optical recording member for use with a recording laser for optical recording and retrieving information thereon, as well as a method of fabricating and using said member is described. The optical recording member comprises in sequential order a structural substrate, a thermally degradable polymer layer, a light absorbing recording layer, a thermally degradable polymer dielectric layer, and a reflective layer. The substrate and the thermally degradable polymer layers are stable under ambient light and temperature conditions and substantially transparent to the recording and reading optical radiation. The combined thicknesses of the light absorbing layer and the dielectric layer are such as to provide anti-reflecting conditionsat the recording wavelength and optical contrast between marked and unmarked areas at the reading wavelength. The optical recording member may be used with a single laser source for both recording and reading. Upon exposure to recording radiation, the portion of the light absorbing layer exposed is heated by the absorbed energy which in turn heats adjacent areas of both thermally degradable polymer layers to a level where at least some polymer decomposition with a consequent evolution of gaseous decomposition products occurs resulting in the formation of a hole in the exposed area of the heat absorbing layer.

There is described a method for forming a photoreceptor wherein a substrate having a thin electrically insulating oxide film on a surface thereof is subjected to an electroless deposition step from a selenious acid solution whereby the oxide film is dissolved and a thin selenium layer is formed on the substrate. In one embodiment, a relatively thick photoconductive insulating layer comprising selenium or alloys thereof is deposited by vacuum evaporation over the previously electrolessly deposited selenium layer. In another embodiment, a layer of a charge carrier transport material is deposited over the selenium layer. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, an oxide-free substrate is initially subjected to an electrochemical oxidation step in an alkaline medium to form a thin electrically insulating oxide film on the surface thereof.

A method for forming an electrophotographic imaging member comprising electrochemically depositing amorphous selenium on a conductive substrate while simultaneously illuminating the substrate with electromagnetic radiation through a periodic spatial light modulating means. The deposited selenium layer has a periodically varying thickness. The selenium layer is then overcoated with a layer of a charge carrier transport material which is capable of transporting at least one species of charge carrier. The resulting imaging member has extended range and solid area reproduction capability.

There is disclosed a method for forming a photosensitive imaging member to be subjected to light of a specific wavelength comprising: depositing a charge generating layer on a substrate, depositing a charge transport layer on the charge generating layer, wherein there is variation in the thickness of the transport layer, and controlling during the deposition of the charge generating layer the thickness of the generating layer as a way to substantially suppress the optical interference effects at the wavelength of illumination due to the variation in the thickness of the transport layer, wherein the thickness of the generating layer is controlled to enable the imaging member to exhibit an optical absorption modulation which is effective for substantially suppressing the optical interference effects.
