Abstract: This Application sets forth techniques for provisioning and activating electronic subscriber identity modules (eSIMs) for mobile wireless devices. An eSIM is reserved during a sales order process and later activated during device activation after receipt by a user. An option for eSIM installation in place of (or in addition to) physical SIM installation is provided when purchasing the mobile wireless device. The reserved eSIM can replace a previous SIM/eSIM or be a new eSIM. During device activation, installation and activation of the eSIM occurs. Activation of the eSIM can occur before or after deactivation of a transferred SIM/eSIM. The mobile wireless device accounts for propagation delay of eSIM activation through MNO servers by disabling and re-enabling the eSIM until initial attachment to an MNO cellular wireless network succeeds or a maximum number of retry attempts is reached.

Connectivity to a cellular wireless network can be allowed for provisioning one or more eSIMs to a mobile wireless device using hardware device identifiers for authentication and a limited purpose provisioning connection when the cellular wireless network supports provisioning connections without the use of a provisioning profile for access.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods to support emergency services sessions by network elements and by a wireless device are disclosed. The wireless device, when roaming to a visited country/region, queries a network-based server to obtain information for Public Land Mobile Networks (PLMNs) that support emergency services sessions via non-cellular wireless access in the visited country/region. The network-based server responds with a list of PLMNs from which the wireless device selects a PLMN. The wireless device further queries the network-based server to obtain information for evolved Packet Data Gateways (ePDGs) for a selected PLMN and receives from the network-based server a list of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for ePDGs that support emergency services sessions via non-cellular wireless access for the selected PLMN. The wireless device further queries the network-based server for local numbers of the visited country for establishing emergency services sessions and receives a categorized list of local numbers for emergency services.

Abstract: A server of a wireless operator creates a roaming list based on a user's roaming plan and sends the roaming list to the user's wireless device. The roaming list includes a list of public land mobile networks (PLMNs). When the user travels away from their home wireless network to another geographic area, the wireless device scans based on the roaming list for radio signals. The roaming list contributes to user satisfaction because timely attachment to a radio network while away from home occurs efficiently since the wireless operator creates the roaming list based on both i) roaming agreements that the wireless operator is a party to with other wireless operators, ii) the user's roaming plan, iii) the radio access technology (RAT) capabilities of the wireless device and iv) the RAT capabilities of other wireless operators in particular geographic regions.

Abstract: Methods, apparatuses and computer readable media are described to compensate for radio frequency link imbalances in a wireless communication device. Processing circuitry in the wireless communication device detects a radio frequency link imbalance for a bi-directional communication link. The wireless communication device biases one or more operational parameters of the wireless communication device to adjust for a performance degradation induced by the radio frequency link imbalance. The wireless communication device determines whether a trigger condition for cell selection, reselection, or handover occurs based on the biased operational parameters, and when the trigger condition occurs, performs a remediating action to compensate for the radio frequency link imbalance. Remediation can include performing an intra-RAT or inter-RAT reselection or handover.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus to manage registration for cellular services of a secondary wireless device associated with a primary wireless device are disclosed. The secondary wireless device can detect entering proximity to the primary wireless device and in response to the detecting deactivate a cellular wireless interface of the secondary wireless device to conserve battery power, and provide an indication to the primary wireless device, via a non-cellular wireless interface, to cause the primary wireless device to perform a deregistration of the secondary wireless device for cellular services. The secondary wireless device can establish connections and communicate via non-cellular wireless interfaces while within proximity of the primary wireless device. Upon leaving proximity of the primary wireless device, the secondary wireless device can activate the cellular wireless interface and register for cellular services to permit establishing connections and communicating directly with a cellular wireless network via the cellular wireless interface.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods to support authentication failure handling by network elements and by a wireless communication device when attempting access to services through non-cellular wireless networks by the wireless communication device are disclosed. Error messages received from evolved packet core (EPC) network elements, such as an authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) server, are mapped to failure messages provided to wireless communication devices by internetworking equipment, such as an evolved packet data gateway (ePDG). The wireless communication device determines a failures cause based on the failure messages and disallows retry attempts until select criteria are satisfied.

Abstract: This Application sets forth techniques for provisioning and activating an electronic subscriber identity module (eSIM) as a primary SIM for a mobile wireless device that includes a limited functionality physical SIM (pSIM) associated with a particular mobile network operator (MNO) and installed in the mobile wireless device at a time of manufacture. An eSIM associated with the particular MNO is reserved during a sales order process and later activated during device activation after receipt by a user using a secure over-the-air (OTA) cellular connection enabled by the limited functionality pSIM, when a non-cellular connection or other Internet accessible connection is available. Dual SIM device configuration processes can be suppressed during activation of the eSIM. After successful attachment of the mobile wireless device to a cellular wireless network of the particular MNO using credentials of the eSIM, the limited functionality pSIM is disabled.
