Passage from the operating phase of a reactor to the catalyst regeneration phase thereof is carried out as follows: the reactor for which the catalyst is to be regenerated is isolated from the remainder of the apparatus, the hydrocarbons contained in the reactor are evacuated, then the reactor is purged. The collected liquid fraction (4) can be expanded and evaporated to provide cooling. The system has particular application for the treatment of natural gas or in petroleum refining or recovery operations.
