Abstract:
In a process for the production of synthetic linear polyamides with stabilized melt viscosity, 0,001 to 1% by weight of an acid of phosphorus or a metal salt thereof and 0,01 to 2% by weight of an alkane monocarboxylic or alkane dicarboxylic acid or a salt thereof with a metal of Group I or II of the Periodic Table is added thereto prior to the shaping of the polyamide (the weight of the phosphorus acid component in the mixture being less than that of the carboxylic acid component). Specified phosphorus acid components are hypophosphorous, phosphorous, hypodiphosphoric, orthophosphoric, pyrophosphoric, hexametaphosphoric and metaphosphoric acid. Specified linear polyamides are polycaprolactam, polycaprylic lactam, polylauric lactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyoctamethylene sebacamide, polyurethanes and polyureas. Specified alkane carboxylic acids are capric, palmitic, stearic, behenic, undecane dicarboxylic, acetic, caproic, oenanthic, succinic and adipic acid. In the examples:-(1) polycaprolactam is kneaded at 250 DEG to 260 DEG C. with disodium hydrogen phosphite pentahydrate, calcium stearate and di-t-butyl-p-cresol; (2) polycaprylic lactam is homogenized at 260 DEG to 280 DEG C. with calcium stearate and disodium hydrogen phosphite and (3) polyhexamethylene adipamide is kneaded with calcium stearate and disodium hydrogen phosphite.
Abstract:
A composition comprises a synthetic linear film forming polyamide having uniformly distributed therein a dicarboxylic acid diester containing from 18-42 carbon atoms derived from an alkanol having 4-12 carbon atoms and an alkane dicarboxylic acid with 4-18 carbon atoms, in an amount of from 0,05%-1% by weight with reference to the weight of the polyamide. Specified dicarboxylic acid diesters are di-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, dinonyl adipate, dioctyl sebacate, the di-isobutyl ester of 1-octylnonanedi carboxylic acid, the di (2-ethylhexyl) ester of 1-nonyl octane dicarboxylic acid and mixtures of the di-isooctyl ester of 2-methyl glutaric acid and di-isooctyl adipate. Specified polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide, polydecamethylene sebacamide, polycaprolactam and polycapryllic lactam. The examples describe the mixing at elevated temperatures of (1) polyhexamethylene adipamide, di-(2-ethylhexyl)-2-methyl-glutarate and di-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate; (2) polyhexamethylene adipamide, di-isooctyl adipate and titanium dioxide; (3) polycaprolactam and dinonyl adipate; (4) polycaprolactam and the di-isooctyl ester of 1-octyl nonane dicarboxylic acid and (5) polyhexamethylene adipamide and the di-(2-ethylhexyl) ester of 1-octyl nonane dicarboxylic acid; the products of the examples being suitable for injection moulding.
Abstract:
A stabilized polyamide contains as stabilizers 0,5 to 2% by weight of hypophosphoric acid and/or a hypophosphate and 0,001 to 1% by weight of a water soluble cerium (III) salt and/or a water-soluble titanium (III) salt. Specified hydrophosphates are lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, barium, aluminium, cerium, thorium, copper, zinc, titanium, iron, nickel and cobalt hypophosphates. Specified water-soluble cerium (III) and titanium (III) salts are the chlorides, bromides, halides, sulphonates, formates and acetates. Specified polyamides are those derived from caprolactam, caprylic lactam, o -amino-undecanoic acid, the salts of adipic, suberic, sebacic or decamethylene dicarbonic acid with hexamethylene or decamethylene diamine, of heptane dicarboxylic acid with bis-(4-aminocyclohexyl)-methane, of tetramethylene diisocyanate and adipic acid and of aliphatic w-aminoalcohols and dicarboxylic acids each with 4 to 34 carbon atoms between the functional groups. The stabilizers may be added to the polyamides during or after the polycondensation reaction. Delustrants, e.g. cerium dioxide, titanium dioxide, thorium dioxide or ytrium trioxide may also be added to the polyamides. Examples (1) and (2) describe the polymerization of:-(1) hexamethylene diammonium adipate in the presence of disodium dihydrogen hypophosphate hexahydrate and (a) titanium (III) chloride hexahydrate, (b) cerium (III) chloride; (2) caprolactam in the presence of (a) thorium hypophosphate and titanium (III) chloride hexahydrate, whilst in Example (3) polycaprylic lactam is mixed with tetrasodium hypophosphate, titanium (III) acetate and titanium dioxide.
