Abstract:
The present invention relates to latex paints, which contain a) a multistage carboxylated polymer latex binder obtainable by multistage aqueous emulsion polymerisation of a monomer composition M consisting of at least one non-ionic monomer M1, which is selected from C1-C20-alkyl esters of acrylic acid, C1-C20-alkylesters of methacrylic acid, and vinyl aromatic monomers; one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers M2, which are selected from monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids having 3 to 6 carbon atoms and monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, and optionally one or more non-ionic monomers M3, which are different from monomers M1; where in at least one stage, the relative amount of monomers M2 in added in this stage is at least 6% by weight, based on the total amount of monomers added in said stage, the total amount of monomers M2 being from 0.05 to 5% by weight, based on the total amount of the monomer composition M; b) a titanium dioxide pigment; c) a polymeric dispersant PD which is selected from homo and copolymers of monomers M4, which are selected from monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids having 3 to 6 carbon atoms and monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, where the monomers M4 make up at least 85% of the monomers forming the polymeric dispersant; and d) an associative thickener polymer.
Abstract:
A copolymer includes a hydrophobic head segment and a random copolymer tail segment comprising hydrophobic blocks and ionizable blocks. Emulsion polymerization systems incorporate the copolymer as a surfactant.
Abstract:
A composition obtained by the following steps (i) furnishing a composition (C) comprising an emulsion polymer (a) and thereafter (ii) adding to said composition (C) a composition comprising a water-soluble polymer (b) comprising ether groups, wherein said water-soluble polymer (b) does not comprise carboxylate groups and, said water-soluble polymer (b) has a solubility in water of at least 50 g/l. A method of making a such a composition and the use of such for water based coatings or inks is described.A composition comprising (i) an emulsion polymer (a) comprising carboxylate groups, and (ii) a water-soluble random or block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide having an ethylene oxide content of at least 45 weight-% with respect to the amount of the copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and having a weight average molecular weight of from 300 to 4000 g/mol is also disclosed.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a process of producing a polymeric dispersion by free radical emulsion polymerization of a monomer composition including ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of a block copolymer. The block copolymer has a first block including at least 80 wt.-% units of alkyl acrylate and a second block including units of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer with sulfonic acid groups. Either the first or the second block is connected with a nitroxyl radical. The polymeric dispersion is obtainable by the disclosed process, and the block copolymer is used in the process. Further disclosed herein is a method of using the block copolymer as an emulsifying agent for free radical emulsion polymerization.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a latex paint containing i) a multistage carboxylated polymer latex binder, ii) a titanium dioxide pigment, and iii) a polymeric dispersant PD having a number average molecular weight, as determined by GPC, of at most 5500 Dalton. Also disclosed are methods for preparing the latex paint, and coatings containing the latex paint.
