Abstract: The present invention relates to an aqueous emulsion paint comprising a) 5% to 50% by weight of an aqueous polymer dispersion having a solids content in the range from 40% to 60% by weight, obtainable by the free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and one or more vinylaromatics, preferably styrene, b) 0.1% to 5% by weight of alkali metal alkylsiliconate and/or water-soluble silicate, c) 20% to 70% by weight of inorganic fillers, d) 0% to 30% by weight of at least one pigment, e) 0.1% to 10% by weight of customary auxiliaries, and f) water, based in each case on the total amount of the emulsion paint, the pH of the emulsion paint having a value in the range from 10 to 12, and also relates to the aqueous polymer dispersions, to a process for the preparation thereof and to the use thereof as organic binders in emulsion paints having a high pH.

Abstract: The present invention relates to latex paints, which contain a) a multistage carboxylated polymer latex binder obtainable by multistage aqueous emulsion polymerisation of a monomer composition M consisting of at least one non-ionic monomer M1, which is selected from C1-C20-alkyl esters of acrylic acid, C1-C20-alkylesters of methacrylic acid, and vinyl aromatic monomers; one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers M2, which are selected from monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids having 3 to 6 carbon atoms and monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, and optionally one or more non-ionic monomers M3, which are different from monomers M1; where in at least one stage, the relative amount of monomers M2 in added in this stage is at least 6% by weight, based on the total amount of monomers added in said stage, the total amount of monomers M2 being from 0.05 to 5% by weight, based on the total amount of the monomer composition M; b) a titanium dioxide pigment; c) a polymeric dispersant PD which is selected from homo and copolymers of monomers M4, which are selected from monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids having 3 to 6 carbon atoms and monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, where the monomers M4 make up at least 85% of the monomers forming the polymeric dispersant; and d) an associative thickener polymer.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for preparing an aqueous polymer latex by polymerising a monomer composition M by a radical emulsion polymerisation, where at least 95% of the monomer composition M is metered during a period P to the polymerisation reaction under polymerisation conditions, such that during at least one period P(n) within the period P, the relative amount of monomers M2, which are metered to the polymerisation reaction during the periods P(n), to the total amount of the monomer composition M, which is metered to the polymerisation reaction during said period P(n), is at least 1% by weight higher than the relative amount of monomers M2, which are metered to the polymerisation reaction outside of each of said periods P(n), to the total amount of the monomer composition M, which is metered to the polymerisation reaction outside of each of said periods P(n).
