Object of the invention is a process for the production of 2,4 dihydroxybenzophenone by reacting resorcinol with benzotrichloride in the presence of an organic solvent which is immiscible with water with the addition of a molar quantity from 1 to 5 times that of the benzotrichloride of a low molecular weight aliphatic alcohol.
