THE INVENTION PROVIDES NOVEL A-METHYLOL-BENZOIN-SULPHONIC ACID ESTERS WHICH MAY BE MANUFACTURED BY REACTINGG EQUIVALENT AMOUNTS OF AN A-HYDROXY-METHYLBENZOIN AND A SULPHONIC ACID ESTER CHLORIDE IN THE PRESENCE OF A HYDROGEN CHLORIDE BINDING AGENT. THEREFORE, THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR USE AS CIRING CATALYSTS WHICH CAN BE ACTIVATED BY UV-RAYS FOR ACID-CURABLE RESINS OR RESIN COMPOSITIONS.
