    Abstract: Disclosed herein are glasses that present several advantages over traditional glass compositions used in optical applications. The glasses disclosed herein have a low devitrification tendency and can be processed by melt quenching and formed into macroscopic components. The glasses have high glass thermal stability indices and are chemically durable. The glasses disclosed herein are transparent when heat treated in air or oxygen and have high refractive indices and low density, as well, making them suitable for optical applications.

    Abstract: Glass compositions include phosphorus oxide (P2O5), niobia (Nb2O5), titania (TiO2), potassium oxide (K2O) and calcium oxide (CaO) as essential components and may optionally include barium oxide (BaO), sodium oxide (Na2O), lithium oxide (Li2O), tungsten oxide (WO3), bismuth oxide (Bi2O3), tantalum oxide (Ta2O5), silica (SiO2) and other components. The glasses may be characterized by high refractive index at 587.56 nm at comparably low density at room temperature.

    Abstract: A method of forming a glass ceramic substrate having a through-glass via can include treating at least a portion of a first major surface of a precursor glass substrate along a laser scan path with a source of laser energy to form a treated precursor glass substrate. The through-glass via has a predetermined shape and extends through the first major surface of the glass ceramic substrate and a second major surface of the glass ceramic substrate. The first major surface defines a first opening and the second major surface defining a second opening and a ratio of a waist diameter of the through-glass via, measured at a location between the first opening and the second opening, to a surface diameter of the through-glass via, measured at either the first opening of the second opening of the through-glass via is in a range of from about 30% to about 100%.
