A centrally located stage of a time division multiplex switching network is partitioned into blocks and a separate processor is provided to control each such block. The partition is extended to the edge of the network by having each partition processor control through the network both the network equipment in adjacent stages directly coupled to the controlled block, and a preassigned portion of the remainder of the network out to the edge thereof which can be reached either through such controlled equipment or through similar equipment of other partitions. In addition, translating, scanning, and service functions are advantageously separated out of the partitioned processors and performed by separate processors that communicate through the call switching network with the partition processors and/or the network-edge ports.

A method for extracting selected time information from a stream of serialized AES digital audio data. A first transition of a first preamble of said stream of serialized AES digital audio data is detected and, upon detection of the transition, a time count initiated. A second transition indicative of a subsequent preamble of said serialized AES digital audio data is subsequently detected and the time count halted. The time separating the first and second transitions is then determined. The separation time, which preferably is determined in the form of a fast clock pulse count, is then transferred to a decoding logic circuit for use in decoding the stream of serialized AES digital audio data.

An iterative method of correcting errors in a data block. Bad bytes are first identified using information derived from an 8B/10B decoding of the data block. Within each identified bad byte, suspect bits are subsequently identified using information derived from parity decoding of a row of the data block. Each suspect bit is then classified as either a confirmed error bit or an unconfirmed error bit using information derived from parity decoding of a column of the data block in which the suspect bit is located. Confirmed error bits are then corrected, the parity bits corresponding to the confirmed error bit reset, and the bad byte cleared. The process is then repeated if one or more bad bytes remain in the data block.
