摘要: A method of forming a photovoltaic device includes a plurality of quantum wells and a plurality of barriers. The quantum wells and barriers are disposed on an underlying layer. The barriers alternate with the quantum wells. One of the plurality of quantum wells and the plurality of barriers is comprised of tensile strained layers and the other of the plurality of quantum wells and the plurality of barriers is comprised of compressively strained layers. The tensile and compressively strained layers have elastic properties. The method includes selecting compositions and thicknesses of the barriers and quantum wells taking into account the elastic properties such that each period of one tensile strained layer and one compressively strained layer exerts substantially no shear force on a neighboring structure; providing the underlying layer; and forming the quantum sells and barriers on the underlying layer according to the derived compositions and thicknesses.

摘要: Light collectors for use in building-integrated solar concentrators comprise waveguiding components incorporating spaced-apart light collecting elements arranged to collect light from a plurality of lenses in a lens array and deliver light to solar cells for photovoltaic conversion, where several lenses are coupled to each individual solar cell. The light collecting elements may comprise shaped ends of bulk waveguides to deliver incident solar radiation directly to the solar cells, or luminescent or amplifying material that converts the incident radiation to a secondary light signal that is delivered to the cells. The lenses may be pivotally mounted in a variety of ways to improve solar tracking by avoiding mechanical clashes between lenses and optimising the amount of incident light that is harvested. Filters containing heavy water may be positioned in front of the solar cells to absorb long wavelength light unconvertible by the cells, heat energy being then extractable from the heavy water.

摘要: A method of operating a solar cell is provided in which strain balanced multiple quantum well stacks containing greater than 30 quantum wells disposed between bulk semi-conductor regions having a band gap differences between the deepest well of the stack and the bulk semi-conducting region of greater than 60 mev is irradiated with radiation having an intensity of greater than 100 suns. Photons are absorbed with and outside of the quantum well stack to generate electron hole pairs recombination of electrons and holes is substantially only via a radiative recombination mechanism.

摘要: A photovoltaic junction for a solar cell is provided. The photovoltaic junction has an intrinsic region comprising a multiple quantum well stack formed from a series of quantum wells separated by barriers, in which the tensile stress in some of the quantum wells is partly or completely balanced by compressive stress in the others of the quantum wells. The overall elastostatic equilibrium of the multiple quantum well stack may be ensured by engineering the structural and optical properties of the quantum wells only, with the barriers having the same lattice constant as the materials used in the oppositely doped semiconductor regions of the junction, or equivalently as the actual lattice size of the junction or intrinsic region, or the bulk or effective lattice size of the substrate. Alternatively, the barriers may contribute to the stress balance.

摘要: A photovoltaic system includes a photovoltaic device that includes a lower photovoltaic cell fabricated from semiconductor material having a first bandgap, and having first electrical contacts for extraction of current from the lower cell; an electrically insulating layer monolithically fabricated on the lower photovoltaic cell; and an upper photovoltaic cell monolithically fabricated on the electrically insulating layer from semiconductor material having a second bandgap larger than the first bandgap, and having second electrical contacts for extraction of current from the upper cell. The photovoltaic system also includes one or more first photon sources operable to supply photons to the photovoltaic device, the photons having wavelengths in a first wavelength range associated primarily with the first bandgap. The photovoltaic system further includes one or more second photon sources operable to supply photons to the photovoltaic device, the photons having wavelengths in a second wavelength range primarily associated with the second bandgap.
